Ever had a bad IP trade experience or been strung along trying to get one done? See a ton of bad trader threads here and there, but they are never for IP trades. New to trading, In process of completing my 3rd trade. I just had a bad experience trying to get my first IP trade done. Thought for sure an IP trade would be a great experience, due to thinking most people would go farther out of their way to make a trade memorable when you're dealing with someone who is in your neck of the woods and meeting in person. Basically without getting too much into it or without giving the person up, I got strung along multiple times after allowing the person every time to pick the general day/time. They continuously stated they were very busy when I texted them and had a somewhat understandable reason (for 1 cancellation, not 3 IMO.) It made it so much worse because every time the person picked a time the day before they were like, I'm free Sunday night, or Monday afternoon, or some time Tuesday. I couldn't get them to really lock down to a specific time, so It caused me to pretty much keep my schedule open. Anyway after the 3rd time of either cancelling on me or failing to communicate after cancelling and saying they would get back to me, I just cancelled the trade and told them essentially, clearly you're too busy to be completing trades and good luck. Just didn't feel like wasting my time any more. It's not like this person just signed up yesterday. Profile states doesn't have any trades done via BA however claims to have multiple trades done via other methods. Person is also pretty active on the boards. Just thought it was really weird in general and wondering if anyone else had bad experiences like this.
Unfortunately, IP trades are no different than shipping trades. You're going to mostly get people who are cool, generous, & good to deal with. Then you're going to get the occasional idiot who can't seem to find his/her ass with both hands, & you wonder how they find their way home every day. It happens. Nothing to do but move along.
I had one that wasn't exactly bad, but similarly with not making it and having to reschedule after I had set aside the time for meeting up. It was he who ended up canceling after not being able to find another time having to back out of the 2nd tentative time. I saw him offer up some ISO that I had and would've traded, but didn't want to have to go through the same thing again. I just feel that if you are going to post asking for an IP trade, you should be available to meet within a week without having to reschedule multiple times and then cancel altogether. Otherwise, every IP trade that ended up in a meet up has been very positive or at least simple and quick.
Exactly. I kept giving this person the benefit of the doubt. You should be able to lock down 30 minutes out of your day if you are the one posting and you are the one setting day/times to meet up, unless you have a death in the family or serious illness or injury happen suddenly. In that case, you would probably not be giving a shit about beer and not posting or replying to me which is completely reasonable. Live and learn, on to the next one.
I've had two fairly recent IP trades where the other person didn't show up. In both cases, they contacted me shortly after and apologized, and we agreed to a second meeting. In both cases the brought an extra bottle, showed up as planned, and were really nice guys.
I recently had an IP trade that never happened. Both myself and the other guy have legitimately busy schedules and live in different parts of town, so it wasn't a big deal. Other than cost, shipping trades can sometimes be easier haha I will say though if I had planned to meet somebody at a certain time and place I would be annoyed if they didn't show.
I have been burned twice by non-locals who asked to meet up at Founders. Annoying, but no big deal, because I am not out anything other than time.
I've only done in person trades thus far and have yet to have a bad experience, the few guys I have met up with have been really cool and all but one gave an extra ( the one guy was very green on BA). It was pretty cool to deal with some local beer lovers and shoot the shit a little bit with people who share the same interests. I've been leery of shipping trades for the same reasons that most people had when they first started shipping; will they come through, will they screw me, will I pack the box wrong and break something? I genuinely like meeting other BA's which is why I like ip trades. I suppose I just need to find an experienced trader to ship to that I can be resonably comfortable shipping to.
All my IP trades have been great. One the guy drive up 50+ miles to meet me at a brewery close to home. In turn I bought he and his wife a beer.
I had someone cancel on me once, day of, via text. Still haven't heard from him after that despite sending a message here to try to reschedule. Really more strange than anything else.
The few IP trades I have done, have gone smoothly...I really don't get why people commit to trades or whatever and then back out/ stop communications. That shit is weird.
I had a BA here forget about a trade and keep me waiting for well over an hour, showed up in his pajamas and said sorry but didn't bring anything extra... i have not traded with him since. Didn't think he meant to just left a bad taste in my mouth the entire time i was waiting.
Ive had both mine go smoothly, Id assume situations may vary depending on where you live. Being in Minneapolis there are a lot of great bars and taprooms to meet throughout the metro that are close for both parties. They usually offer a good excuse to go out and share a great beer (surly cask wednesday, tap takeovers and so on) with a fellow BA without creating an inconvenience of driving just to swap bottles and leave
I am definitely not going to flake on someone if I agree to meet them at a specific time and place. Of course, things do happen, so communication is key. If I had the slightest inkling that things are not going to go as planned, I would let them know right away.
