There is a bill in the legislature in North Carolina that will require that beers over 9% only be sold in liquor stores. The bill is HB 782. I suggest that you contact your legislators and start making some noise about this one.

Read the bill. It is for fortified malt beverages that are NOT brewed using the traditional brewing methods. I am guessing this is in response to the Kings Mountain "brewery". As I read it, will have no effect on beer.

"Fortified malt beverage" means a beverage that meets all of the following requirements:
    a. Contains at least nine percent (9%) alcohol by volume and no more than fifteen percent (15%) alcohol by volume.
    b. Is treated by processing, filtration, or another method of manufacture that is not generally recognized as a traditional process in the production of a beer as described in 27 C.F.R. § 25.55.
    c. Contains an added flavor containing alcohol or any other ingredient containing alcohol.
    d. The manufacturer is required to file a formula for approval with the United States Alcohol and Tobacco Trade and Tax Bureau pursuant to 27 C.F.R. § 25.55.

seems to exclude most beer but I wonder about bourbon and wine barrel aged beers?

That was my understanding as well.

According to WRAL: "Malt beverages with alcohol content similar to traditional beer nor traditional beers with alcohol contents between 9 and 15 percent would not be affected by the bill."

I hope you are right, but where the current crew in the legislature is concerned, it is wise to be vigilant.

If this is aimed at flavored malt beverages, I'm fine with it. Until it passes, we should keep an eye on it. You can never tell with the current bunch of bozos in Raleigh, based on their floating a state religion idea. Sen. Neal Hunt, (R) from Raleigh, tried to put a last minute amendment into the Pop the Cap bill that would have caused problems after he told me on the phone he was in favor of the bill. I feel qualified to call the current crop bozos, since I've almost always voted Republican.

The cynic in me thinks that this has to do more with taxes than religious beliefs. Once you put BA stuff and beers over 9%, im almost certain they fall into a higher tax bracket which means more for our backwards government.

You could put Everclear on gas station shelves, and it wouldnt make a marked difference. Things would level out after a bit.

Especially after I throw out that ludicrous example, it means even more that this is really the matter of a definition of a word. This has nothing to do with whats in the bottle, just how politicians portray thigns.

Ill still give my same effort for KBS et al. as yall should.

Sorry I got all philosophical, but it was needed.

Cheers and drink well, sirs and ma'ams!
