Next week someone will report cauliflower and rotten egg flavor. That person will also be from Ohio

You're right, my bad, it's my fault. Especially because I'm from Ohio. If it makes you feel any better I used to live in Michigan.

I didn't brew the beer. If you don't detect those flavors or aromas, cheers to you, probably makes everything more enjoyable.

Btw I'm not the only one getting peanuts, or other wildly unusual flavors from Controversiale. Read the reviews.

Just a little too much of a coincidence is all. I think some peoples love of their college football team is spilling over into real life. It's just beer, if you don't like don't drink it. I've never heard anyone describe any Short's beer like it was a salad until now. Not buying the smear campaign

Controversiale , at a month and and a half old , was solid right when it showed up my way... I'm getting no bad vibes here on it. Shorts puts out the best hopped up brews and I thoroughly enjoy each one!!

I also enjoyed a sixer of HUMA cans that were nothing but the HUMA I've had in bottles prior to canning and each can was great !

The only person that brought up the rivalry is you. In fact, I only ever noticed the nasty, sports-borne animosity when I moved to Ohio, coming from Ohioans. Until now, that is. And it's been over 10 years. Hopefully it doesn't go any further than this.

We just started getting Shorts literally within the past couple months. I just came across this thread a whole month after I had and reviewed my first Shorts brews from Ohio-sold bottles. I wasn't the only one describing the flavors and aromas I got. When I came across this thread today, finding even more people describing the same things I experienced, I was glad to not be alone in this experience.

All in all, it's very odd to me as well, but considering I haven't watched any form of college sports for 15+ years, I couldn't give 2 shits about that nonsense. To call it a smear campaign or conspiracy is dismissive and silly. Ohioans love tons of MI breweries despite their otherwise irrational hatred of an entire state.

How many Michigan breweries distribute to Ohio?

Do you want to answer all of your questions and clear this up for me? Because I haven't the slightest clue, regarding any of those.

I don't have a horse in this race, seems like you've got a bone to pick and I'm so far beyond the wrong guy you really have no idea how out of bounds you are.

i find huma to be infinitely more complex in malt and hop flavor than most of your citrus fruit bomb IPAs that are popular these days. perhaps people that havent had it before just arent used to it and maybe it isnt their cup of tea. i have been drinking this beer for years and the bottles I have had here in chicago taste like all the rest that i have had in the past.

My Michigan-born boss has worked closely with the Shorts guys, basically on a first-name basis with them. I brought this issue up to her. All she had to say was that, at least before their expansion, Shorts primarily grew their own hops on Michigan soil. She noted Michigan soil is very rich and robust, which can make for earthy hops (she's been a sommelier for 15 years now, I'll trust her judgements on soil).

But there's a difference in a decidedly non-citrus forward beer and one that has flavors that send off red flags in one's mind. Alpine Pure Hoppiness, even BP Dorado is very noticeably piney, herbal, resinous and bitter. But not vegetal like this. It could be that there are kinks to be worked out with the expansion, but the responses here are night and day. Hopefully us non-Michigan states can get a proper taste. We all know it's not intended to smell and taste like boiled broccoli (and yes, even on draft here it's tasted like that).

There is no "rivalry". Everyone in Ohio loves Bells, Founders, etc. Football is a game. Life is a game. Who cares. Go earth. *sips an alpha king*

I didn't know Shorts was in the hop growing business. @HopHeadHerman can you give us the straight scoop on hops and Shorts?

I will say that the soil in Michigan can vary greatly depending on where you are. Mine is gravel, my hops do OK.

We have never grown our own hops for Huma and supplier has not changed since we opened.

I didn't think so. The post I replied to said you had or were, which I would have heard about before.

Edit - sometimes it is easiest to get accurate information from the source.

it really is. Shorts is my favorite brewery, and they consistently turn out top notch stuff! Good thing Freedom of 78, Beard of Zeus and Hopstache are coming up

Hopstache is on point once again this year. Best grapefruit IPA out there IMO. None of that artificial grapefruit flavor like you get with GF Sculpin.

I had a bottle of controversiALE recently and it was really bad. I thought it was an old bottle; hope it was.

In any case, I have been to Shorts a half dozen times and have had many of their brews... they have always been hit or miss for me.

Well I have to take back my claim of never having a bad Shorts bottle. Had a can of rotten broccoli Huma. The rest of the six seems better, but definitely a bit off. Very disappointing.

Hopstache, on the other hand, is amazing again.
