He posted an ISO on April 20th and we agreed to terms. Canadian Trade. I sent him a tracking number on April 23, and he was supposed to ship the same day. Speaking mostly via text, he told me that the tracking number was in his car, and would have it for me that evening.

Two days later, he says the tracking number had been lost, so I started contracting his references (only 2). All said he's been good for their trades, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt and let it go. My box arrived to him and he started posting that he was drinking the beer I had sent him. Still nothing. Again, via text message, he told me it must just be caught up in Customs. I've never done an international trade before.

A month in, I told him that the package must just be lost. Nothing ever came in, so he offered me replacement bottles. I chose from his list, and sent him the info. He's never responded. Now I'm 99.9% sure he's just ignoring me. I've sent Texts and BMs. No answers. He's still logging into BA, so I just don't want anyone else to get screwed. Shipping to Canada was expensive enough, but now being out about $80 in beer on top is even worse.

I guess it's kind of my fault. I should have had him ship first. And thought it was weird that he deleted threads as soon as they were "completed" but, hey, Canadians eh? I kid, I kid...

Man that sucks. Hard to keep up with the dishonest assholes that have invaded here. A month shy of being yet another 2012 er fouling the trade boards. I kid I kid.

That is unfortunate man. Be sure to have him added to the bad trader list.

I can't believe how many of these are popping up, makes one a little paranoid to trade with a new BA. I've done one recently and it was as smooth as can be, she was a pleasure to trade with and did everything right.

That was the thing. He wasn't exactly new. Nov 2011, 18 months with a relatively lengthily posting history, I figured I would be ok. Live and learn.

His first two trades were probably set ups before moving onto a big box or expensive beer. Two easy locals for locals completed looks ok, then on the 3d one or subsequent trade bang he disappears. What did you lose in the box? It sucks sorry for your loss, but this forum depends on trust and honesty, and the assholes will kill it stealing beer. It will get to the point where it's just a hassle and I'll deal with online stores. Hell even EBAY is starting to look good as more of these posts pop up.

I don't really think so. Just stick to established traders. If I recognize someone from their forum posting I don't even bother looking at references, because it's so rare that someone who's helpful and contributes to the community positively goes bad. (Note that this doesn't just mean that they have a lot of posts. They have to be good posts, that actually contribute meaningfully and show some signs of intelligence.) If I don't recognize someone then I check out their contacts, and there's usually a person or two I've traded with or recognize from the forums. If they don't have history, they trade first. If anything feels fishy, no deal.

I've never been burned doing this, so I think it generally works pretty well.

Sorry to hear, Jay. Thanks for the warning. Hope this works out regardless.

Thanks for the heads up, glad you posted the name.

    On a different note...
Does anyone know what happened to the bad trader SGToliver thread?
Does he get a pass since it must have been deleted?

How do you define positive, intelligent posts? I am just getting into trading and could use some advice. Thanks!

I'm the one who started that thread about SGToliver, and it was deleted by Todd.
I have No idea why.... Jon (oldp0rt) is working on my bad trader submission for him though.

SGToliver certainly does not deserve a pass IMHO.

My first piece of advice is to actually think hard about what you want from trading. It's expensive (shipping costs really add up) and a lot of the time the beer you get is at best no better than what's on the shelves near you. If all you want to do is enjoy good beer, there's really no need to trade. But if you have extra money in your pocket and want to try all the fancy crap from around the country/world, it's not a terrible hobby, you just need to be careful, as I said.

Now, as to your original question, from what I've seen you fit the mold. Start with easy things, like proper capitalization, spelling, and grammar. People who can't be assed to write correctly seem to turn out bad a lot more frequently than those who try to present themselves somewhat well. The rest is more of a general feeling, when there's a discussion, are they adding to it or detracting? Do they get pointlessly defensive? Do the things they write leave you facepalming?

All that stuff isn't really obvious to the people who post it, but it's giant red flags to anyone who's paying attention at all. I have no clue if this would've helped here as I don't recognize that guy's name. But I think it's a good thing to keep in mind.

(Also, I didn't say it earlier, but sorry BeerThursdays, that sucks. I hope you're not out anything too crazy.)

When it's international, it's nobody's fault. Sometimes this just happens.

Huh? Funny it was a one way disappearance, and when the guy with the beer stops responding to BM's he's not going to replace the beer, and probably had no intention in the first place.

Bad_Trader is the "friendly troller". He seems to enter a thread, say something ridiculous but not necessarily antagonistic and then leaves.

    Edit: didn't nanobrewer's post...what he said.

I did look at the name and a posting forum is a poor place to look at and pick up sarcasm. I reply to what I read nothing more, everything here in kinda black and white. I did think it was out of character a bit, but it reads like it reads.
