Anyway - I appreciate the opportunity to share my side of the story, regardless. I’ve been out of town since Friday without much cell service, and won’t be back until Tuesday. Will come back to this thread then.

It's not all that "diplomatic" to ignore the messages of a trader you've failed to meet your end of the deal on, either. Weird that civility and custom gets brought up at this point in the conversation.

Not the end of the world, but you're clearly in the wrong here based on your account in my estimation.

Best of luck in making this right.

I can certainly sympathize with the difficulty of a trade going wrong due to no fault of one's own. It's happened to me before, it sucks. But that's a risk we all take when we agree to a trade, and the community at large has collectively decided (rightly, in my estimation) that the burden and risk is on the sender until it gets to the recipient.

Trying to get around that norm is not good and shouldn't happen. It sounds like everything OP did here is reasonable, and I'm happy it sounds like this will work out.

this whole comment is an issue. For proxying, yeah you assume the risk. For trading it’s all about in your possession. If it’s delivered and stolen, up for interpretation. If you assume once you drop it off it’s not your problem, that’s a huge issue. What if you suck at packing? What if someone claims that it’s not updating due to USPS, but they never actually dropped it off?

really feel like it’s an issue with this assumption. I think most people here WOULD be shipping the freshest Monkish they could get to make the trade right

@TallGuyCM what others have said is correct. You are on the hook to get your box to the OP’s porch. OP has no idea that you actually sent it, or how good or bad you packaged it. Why should he be out beer if the reason it didn’t make it was your poor packaging?

I think the only way if I sent someone a box and they didn’t receive it that I wouldn’t feel 100% responsible is if they had a Ring cam and had proof someone stole it off their porch. I’d still send another box and have them sign for it.

I will say this is one of the more civil bad trader threads, but @TallGuyCM you just squandered a chance to fix this. You had an easy opportunity on this thread to make this right. Instead you just shared your side of the story and didn't take responsibility. I don't understand how you had enough cell service to share your side of the story while you were out of town, but curiously not enough service to make the trade right. You don't seem like a bad person here, misguided yes, but not a bad person. You still have an opportunity to make this right by sending a box of beer. Seems like an easy enough fix regardless of what language is used in messaging.

You're not entirely sure what to do? Replace the box that was lost.

Mitchell doesn't need to meet you in the middle, you need to replace the box right away.

New variation of its only beer, the “shipping beer is illegal” defense.

You are on the hook to replace the beer that didn’t make it, no questions asked. This has always been the tried and true rule here.

He would be a fool to send you another box of beers just to get the 16 beers he didn’t get first time!!!

Your way off base, send him the 16 beers, throw in some extras too for putting him through having to deal with your warped logic.

@TallGuyCM not sure if you'll get this given your spotty cell service. Once you've made this right, you can go to "Alert Preferences" and then check the box "Mentions you in a message" under the "Messages in threads section". That way if/when you're next tagged in a BT thread you won't be reliant on those kind souls giving you a heads up.

I wish that one day there would be a response to a BT thread that doesn't automatically get an eye roll.

Crazy that the guy who traded for fresh Monkish actually wanted it to be fresh, the nerve!

I'm just catching back up on this thread so I will share my thoughts given the updates over the weekend and @TallGuyCM 's responses here. I apologize for the length but there is a bit to get through here.
Assuming you are being genuine when you say that you are not sure what to do about the situation, then I hope you will take the feedback you have received and will receive from the community and promptly and completely resolve this situation.
I am not sure how beer trading works on instagram - I will admit I've never made a trade anywhere but through Beer Advocate, but what matters for this situation is how beer trading works on BA.
All I will say is that if you shared the story above with @merpunk1 or indicated in any way that you felt that you were not responsible for replacing the missing box, I can understand him being upset.
In these types of situations, where a box of beer goes missing, or is damaged, it is incumbent on the shipping party to rectify the issue. Thats the risk you assume when trading on Beer Advocate. Now, how exactly you handle resolving that is usually something that can be worked out between the parties. But the default position, in the absence of the two of you agreeing to a re-working of the trade, is that you fulfill your side of the original deal. So if the original trade was for 16 fresh Monkish cans (for the box that went missing), then you're responsible for sending out another box of 16 fresh Monkish cans immediately to rectify the situation.

As for him asking you to ship first ... its a reasonable request for 2 reasons. 1) He's already missing a box from you - while you got his first box. So asking you to ship first is reasonable given those circumstances, and 2) You have 12 trades on here - @merpunk1 has 223. Its common practice for the person with fewer trades to send their box first. In fact, most traders with less feedback, just offer up front to ship first. It engenders trust for you with the more experienced traders.
Again, assuming the original trade was for 16 fresh Monkish cans, I agree with you @TallGuyCM, it was not an unreasonable request.

And finally, I want to get to one issue that @merpunk1 raised in his initial post that you did not address. (I edited it a bit to just get the parts I want to talk about)
Based on this it seems that your communication to OP was not good at all. A major part of any trade is good, clear, and prompt communication. The fact that you stopped responding to OP over the last 3 weeks is unacceptable, especially since it was your box that was the one that was missing.

At this point, from my perspective, the choice is very easy for you @TallGuyCM. Ship another box and fulfill the original deal to @merpunk1's satisfaction and we can close this down. Or, if @merpunk1 is amenable, work with him in good faith to rework the deal and take that route. But keep in mind that if you are going to rework the deal - its your responsibility to make this situation right, not @merpunk1 's.

Alright, it sounds like @merpunk1 and @TallGuyCM worked this out between them.

Make sure you both leave your feedback.

I am going to go ahead and close this one down - if anything creeps back up and we need to reopen it, feel free to shoot me a message.
