Anyone knows about this place? http://baerlicbrewing.com/ I will try to stop by tomorrow and post some feedback here later.
Yeah I go there quite a bit. Awesome spot between the Commons and Beermongers, right next to Blitz. They make very good beer. Their barleywine makes me want to like barleywines.
On my list of "wow I only go to like 10 of the 65 breweries in Portland, I need to go to more breweries" breweries. Hope to visit soon.
The Beer is good. The service sucks. I felt like I was intruding on someones "Living room" get together when I stopped by last month. I love the building! so much potential!
their hoppy barleywine (old blood & guts) is one of my favorite beers of 2014. worth the trip for just that one if it's still on. out in bottles, soon.
With all this talk about their barleywine, this has me very intrigued: http://newschoolbeer.com/2014/12/baerlic-brewings-woodworker-series-barrel-aged-beersin-bottles.html
I've been here twice now, and thoroughly enjoyed both trips. For such a centrally located brewery, I was surprised at how empty the place was both times I went, but I suppose I went on sort of off-hours. The first time I tried one of their beers was actually at Horse Brass a few months back. My friend was getting sick of all of the hoppy beers I was throwing at him and ordered their Ultra hop alt bier (Ulbier?). It was delicious. I also really like their brown ale, and the oatmeal pilsner was interesting. They definitely seem to be better at malt forward styles than hop forward, so keep that in mind if you have a strong preference. I definitely recommend a trip. My opinion might be swayed by the fact that they were playing the soundtrack to my youth (Small Brown Bike, No Use for a Name) during my last visit though. I can understand why some people might be put off by the "hipster" vibe of the place, but the service has been great both times I went. One of the brewers/owners was tending the bar the last time and was happy to take some time to talk to my wife and SiL about the beers.
I have had similar experiences. I think their red, barleywine, and brown are all top notch for style. My wife also craves their red more than any other beer right now - so we end up there often. When i went they were coincidentally playing an album from my childhood, Atmosphere's Seven's Travels. Also, first time I was there - one of the owners saw me peering into the brew house and asked if i wanted a tour. I thought that was pretty cool.
Well it was an album from my... adolescence-hood? Isnt it fun to not know how old people are on the internet. I could literally be 12. Literally, that is a possibility.
