Italian brewers take a very "Everything AND the Kitchen Sink" approach to what they'll put in their beer. The yeast strains range from distinctly Belgian-derived (such as de Montegiocco) to multi-blends & funky (Baladin) to classic C. Sacch (del Borgo.) Some do very interesting wild stuff (Panil, Loverbeer, the aforementioned Baladin.) del Ducato & Piccolo use lots of herbs & spices and the like. Stylistically they are all over the map. I'd suggest looking for the following:

Baladin Nora (amber-ish spice with myrrh, amongst other things)
Panil Barrique` (Flanders style Red, quite acidic)
Birra del Borgo ReALE Extra (IPA)
Birrifico de Montegioco Fumigant (Peat smoked, oak aged Wild)
    " Demon Hunter (Tripel)
Biriffico del Ducato Nuova Mattina (Saison, lightly spiced)
Loverbeer BeerBera (Sour brown w/ grape must)

And you mentioning about the spices is the point I like hitting home. The spices and herbs they use are such apart of the italian taste that it represents regionality and uniqueness in one swoop. I have had every beer you mentioned besides the Panil.Excellent suggeztions!!

what would help the transition or at least venturing in trying is the fact Italian brewers have the utmost respect for the Belgian brewers and for many try to learn directly from them. Thanks for your kind words and expertise!

I didn't realize that you weren't in the area anymore. I haven't been to wineworks in a few weeks but will probably be making a run soon. Maybe as soon as tomorrow.

The Baladin bar in Rome is quite possibly the coolest looking bar i've ever seen, and they had quite a large range of beer (even some Dogfishhead). I had a barrel aged stout that was very good.

And there's also a beer store downtown, i'll de damned if I don't remember exactly where, but it had one of the most impressive selection of beer i've seen, Jolly Pumpkin to almost every European craft... I noticed there was a 6-pack of Cigar City Jai Lai sitting in the fridge... I was seeking this out in the US and was shocked to see this here so i took it to the counter and the woman said it wasn't for sale. She couldn't explain why but I was visibly dissapointed and was leaving when a guy in the back of the store told me to stop. He said it was a gift from his american friend, and that I could just have one for free. We drank one in the store together and talked beer. It was awesome.

So I am the beer buyer for WineWorks, I check with the importer and they only import the kegs as of right now. Any time you or any of you are looking for something imported just send me an email and I can look into it for you and possibly special order it. My email is [email protected]
