I tried to search the forum and Google for an answer to this question, but the answers I wanted didn't turn up, so here goes.

I bought a stainless ball valve for my mash fun from my lhbs, the ball is coated in white grease, I assuming its silicon, so its probably food safe? But should I take it apart and clean the grease off thoroughly? Or just a few good rinses prior to use? I don't want the grease to funk my pre boiled wort up with weird flavors. Thoughts? Experiences?

    Cheers!

wipe off the grease and brew. my valve had a smige of grease "white" on it and i just ran the wort right thru, no trouble with the beer then or now 3+ years later. never hurts to give any new eq a good hot water rinse followed bu a star san bath.

    good luck

Take it apart and soak it in some hot water with dish soap. That'll help remove most of it and you should be good to go. That what I have done to all of my 3 piece ball valves. Rinse them very well afterwards and let them dry.
