This actually makes me want to buy the California Kölsch. I would've probably gone my whole life without knowing its that particular style.

"Pale Ale" used to be "Yellow Tale", I think.

i don't think i've ever even seen these beers before here in Michigan. I think we just get Sculpin and some of the other bigger names

For a long time it was called Yellowtail Pale Ale. I guess it just rolled off the tongue better than Yellowtail Koelsch-style Ale.

Nothing says bought out like the creativity of California Kolsch, and California Amber!

Yup, then they got a C+D or whatever from the makers of Yellowtail wines, so they changed it.

Speaking of Yellowtail, I have seen 6ers of Yellowtail beer at my local Total Wine, and they look... atrocious.

The TTB COLA approvals for both these new names' labels are dated July, 2015 - so, given the lead time of designing and then submitting them, the brewery's decision to change must have come well before the Constellation purchase of Ballast Point announced in November of the same year (not sure when the actual close of the deal was after that).

I suppose the truly paranoid might think Constellation came along early last year and said, "Change the name of them dumb fish labeled beers, and we'll give you a cool Billion for your little outfit here...".:grinning:

Changing the names of those 2 beers would be a sin!

I think we've identified the 312 and the Honker equivalents of this brand segment of the High End portfolio....

I should elaborate... by Yellowtail here I mean the WINE Yellowtail... little kangaroo label, not Ballast Point. I figured it was a novelty thing for Yellowtail wine drinkers.

My honest opinion on BP, if you care to hear it...cool, if not please ignore. I've never been able to bring myself to buy Sculpin for 14.99 a six when there are better cheaper beers in my market. I even went to San Diego last year and found some super fresh Sculpin just to see if maybe folks out there were so into it because it was amazing super fresh... Nope. As far as them selling... that pretty much made them dead to me. And now that Constellation has pretty much got them churning out wine-cooler versions of their beers they're even more dead to me. Honestly just a huge disappointment all around for me. I spent years hearing how great their beer was and wishing I could get it, just to finally get it and have them sell out. Pretty sad to see this happen to such an icon and pioneer in the industry. This name changing doesn't surprise me and frankly I don't think anything else Constellation's marketing dept. can cook up will either.

I don't care what they call Grunion in the future as long as the recipe doesn't change. But this news does leave me oddly concerned for what the future might bring.

I like all the fish names. Hopefully they don't change the names of everything

Very boring generic names with which to be sprucing up your label. If they wanted to drop the fish stuff then they could at least switch to a nautical theme or something....anything!

Kolsch is one of those categorized styles that has always seemed to suffer from an identity crisis. I guess the AB folks have homed in on this and are trying to market Yellowtail as something more exotic...
