A couple of quotes from two articles on the brewing practises in the US in different decades. The first is from an article from the year 1936 (pages 421 and 422):

The second quote is from a 1964 article (page 252):

In the book Amerikanische reiseskizzen aus dem gebiete der technik, landwirthschaft und des socialen lebens (American travel sketches from the areas of technology, agriculture and social life) published in the year 1867, the author Ludwig Häcker writes (after visiting top-fermenting and bottom-fermenting breweries in the US in the year 1863) that generally the hopping rate for common beer and pale ale ranges between 1-3 pounds per barrel (page 172). For schenkbier and lagerbier (bottom fermented beer) the hopping rate of the former is between ½-1 pound and for the latter up to 3 pounds per barrel (page 162).

Not to be a dick, but I believe that you have this backwards. It was brewed and fermented as an ale before being cellared (sometimes with the addition of lager yeast) to eliminate fruity esters.
California Common however, was originally brewed with Lager yeast and fully fermented at higher (ale) temps due to lack of refrigeration. Eventually, due to stuborn brewers, the yeast was pushed hard enough that it mutated into the hybrid strain that it is today.
It's almost as if Cream Ale & Steam Beer are polar oposites, while also being one in the same. America, always running away from what we really are.

    End rant!

P.s. Not a fan of this beer at all. :flushed::grimacing:

Anyone seen this in North Jersey?

Also, anyone know how it compares to Carton Regular Coffee?

Isn't that exactly what I said? Ferment as an ale with lager yeast

No, cali common is fermented at ale temps with Lager yeast. Cream ALE is an ale finished at lager temp. I really mean no disrespect... it confused me as well.

I'm not at all disrespected. I just think you got it wrong dude. I'm looking at the BJCP style guide as we speak, as I am studying for the master Cicerone, and it says quote: "An ale version of the American lager style. Produced by ale Brewers to compete with lager Brewers in the northeast and mid-Atlantic states. Originally known as sparking or present use ales, lager strains were (and sometimes still are) used by some Brewers, but we're not historically mixed with ale strains. Many examples are kräusened to achieve carbonation. Cold conditioning isn't traditional."

If you really want to get crazy look into Kentucky Common... that's a weird one. My bottle shop has some if you're interested.

Hell yeah! Love a Kentucky common. Black Market brewery did an awesome one at the beginning of the year. Had it on tap at my bar. Which ones do you have man?

We have a lot of Cream up here, (Backwoods love, you know?) but just recently Upstate Brewing hooked our distro up with Common Sense. Interesting stuff.

Looking back, I'm wrong with the cold conditioning traditionally, but that's how people make it around here these days. I am certain though that a top-fermenting strain was used at lager temps.

This beer has made it to NY, but not SF yet. Unbelievable.

Ny basically invented the cream ale. Honesty, this isn't worth the hype... this whole golden coffee thing will blow over. Garbage imo. I'd rather have dry-hopped creams/ipl's. Coffee & roast is best left to stouts & porters.

Do you know what's worse than home brewers coming onto BA and arguing/blundering about the intentions of a brewery that they do not work for, are affiliated with or even in the generalized "in the know of" category?

    Nothing!

If you like a beer, drink it. If not, don't. Pretentiousness is making me lose interest in this sport.

This website is very much about sharing opinions man. You should probably consider not using the site of you can't take someone else's thoughts on something.

I'm all about opinions, but having just spent $17 on a six pack last night, and having so many posts about what should/shouldn't have happened with this beer, to the point that one of the brewers had to come on to explain himself, is a bit much.

Or perhaps I'm just really in need of an early "CALM BEFORE THE STORM." Making people calm down for weeks! (with fist raised high in the air for advertising effect.)
