The only thing I can find that is an indicator of the bottle date is a code on the bottom left corner of the label:
    SC 286
    13183

Is this a new form of bottle dating and if so, what does that mean?

    Thanks in advance!

The code means: Day 183 of the year 2013. So July 2nd, 2013.

    Guess that has
Thank you. I always forget the order in which the Julian dating is. So they've switched from a BB date to Julian bottled on date...when did this happen?

I assume it has something to do with their expansion...

They need to stop screwing around and date their bottles in a normal standard format. That goes for every brewery.

that's the way I read it, yes. I wasnt really planning to buy a $10 bomber that day but Enjoy (by) 12/7/13 seemed to fresh to pass. It was very juicy

That's odd. Sounds like the bombers kept the enjoy by date while the bottles went to Julian...

Glad it was good, any idea how long they give the best buy? I'm under the impression that it is 6 months, so if that is the case then it was bottled at basically the same time as mine but with a different way of writing it...really wish everyone would just put the bottled on date and be done with it.

Good call, Mike. Just put a bottled date or an "enjoy by" date on there and call it a day. The last few Union Jack bottles I've looked at says "Bottled on" and then the date is cut off. WTF! I bet I've seen a dozen 6pks like that. I just can't bring myself to roll the dice on a $12 6/pk.

They want to be able to sell their overpriced beer to ignorant consumers. Sculpin is without a doubt the most frequently 'on-sale' beer that I see in shops, mainly due to it being ridiculously overpriced.

If you find that beer fresh enough like within a couple of months - buy it no matter what it costs. Once you get the hang of the julian calendar dating you will recognize the pattern easily enough in it's many forms on lots of beers. It's good for about 3-5 months. honest - I'm cheap so I know. (wait that didn't sound right=)

I follow the date codes ignore best by dates anyway. No IPA is good six months after bottling.

I had some and it wasn't two days old and it was fine. Honest. I think it was close to 2 and half months and it was just fine. This was back in May when it was springtime and the torpedoes be dammed. I saw it and I bought it. It's my highest rated ipa to date and it wasn't just born when I got it. Some say 60 days for it, but I would say if refrigerated, I'll drop off one month and say 4 months.

I guess I sorta thought 90 days.....which wouldve had it bottled less than 2 weeks ago. Maybe it was older. It would be interesting to know if they went to the "Enjoy" marking after the Julian or if they went to Julian after trying "Enjoy". Like Hanzo said, they gotta quit screwing around and adopt a standard.

over here, http://beeradvocate.com/community/threads/ballast-point-dating.19047/, people mention speaking with reps who say the Best By date is 110 days from bottling. Best By dating was supposedly new back in May of 2012 though...so who the hell can tell what's going on. There's Julian dates indicating a July 13 bottling, AND Enjoy by dating. What a cluster....

I just got a 6pk with the new packaging, Julian coded August 15.
First time trying Sculpin. It's good but I'm failing to see why it deserves a price $4-6 more than most other amazing IPAs. At least it's still relatively cheaper than 99% of bombers....
