I know this has been discussed, and this beer seems to have good reviews, the problem I've seen is the beer seems to be 2 1/2 months old and is $8.50 a bomber. I know the local retailers have no control over this, but do you feel like it hurts the beer, is it worth it waiting for more fresh stock ?

I ended up buying a Enveavor for $5.79 a bomber.

Tasted great to me and I'd always recommend trying a new beer... but I'd take the bomber of Endeavour over Sculpin.

How do you guys date the bottles? Maybe I haven't looked closely enough but I've never seen a bottle date on Sculpin.

Ballast Point: Uses a best before date. Ex.: BE293/03302. BE = Big Eye, 293 = Batch, 03302 is the best before (Mar. 30, 2012). Shelf life is six months.

All the ones I see are BB 7/20/2012 which would put the brew date of 1/20/2012. Not terrible, but for almost $17 a 6 pack for an IPA I want something pretty fresh

"Pretty fresh"? I think if you were to drink it outside of that best by date, you'd have an argument. Having had a few of these, they are tasty...and dare I say, just as good if they were a few weeks off the line!?!?

With whales, and bottle releases, and barrel aged, and imperial..., and freshness of an IPA...it's turning into a bit much for beer.

To each his own, I guess. I've got a bottle of Endeavor in the fridge, bottled 2/27. Should I toss it?

I think 6 months is pushing for an IPA, I don't think it would be terrible, just not worth the price. This is just my opinion as its a pricey beer. To me the Endeavor is drinking great, I may try a bomber of Sculpin just to see

I think it's legitimate to question the freshness of Sculpin, considering the price and also the fact that BA'ers who have had access to it for a long time seem to key in on its freshness as to whether it's a true representation of the beer.

Just wanted to post and say that I finally tried Sculpin, even at 3 months old this is amazing !! Really wonderful tropical fruit flavors. Easily the the best IPA I've ever had, would be neat to try it fresh, but as you can tell this really blew me away

A friend picked some up in Dallas this weekend. Looks like they are still the 7/2012 best before date, so January bottling. Having had this multiple times in bottles and tap when travelling to CA, it does not taste like I remember or my tasting notes describe. We need to drink up this batch that sat in the warehouse for 3 months so we can get some fresh stuff ; -) This beer is on my top 5 list of all time...looking forward to having it around.

Sculpin is like Pliny...turns quickly it seems. Not bad, but it loses it's beautiful hop characteristics quickly, as you would expect.

    FYI,
I just found Sculpin at the World Market off 377 in Watauga south of Keller.Same as above date showed best before 7/2012. Very happy to see this in walking distance to my home.

I'll sum it up easily for Sculpin noobs :

Pricey bottle > 3 weeks old : avoid
    Draft: Enjoy.

I don't think there is a distribution agreement yet for the Austin area. Hopefully Ben E Keith gets something together in the next month or two. It may ultimately be in the hands of Ballast Point at this time

Sculpin at 2 1/2 months old is still a tasty brew.Sculpin super fresh is world class. It is pricey,so at a couple + months old it is up to you, whether you spend the $9 on it.

    Cheers All.....
