I agree. I do like Sculpin, and being in San Diego, it's easy to find. So, I'm hoping this is a little different just so it's another good beer to drink around here.

As a homebrewer, I don't buy packaged beer for home consumption often. I've got too much beer lying around as it is! When I do, it's usually because it's a limited release or I'm in a different state on a trip. In either of those cases, price means virtually nothing to me, since its a special treat for myself. If I were buying daily drinking beer off the shelf, I'd certainly not be able to justify $15-20 per six/four pack.

Everyone complaining about it just saying unfiltered didn't look at the label where it mentions it's dry hopped.

It says "extra hopped" on the label. Not sure if it was already hopped to this degree and are trying to exploit that, or if it is a double dry hopped version. Either way, Sculpin is great fresh, but making it unfiltered doesn't really mean much other than some bottles having some floaties, etc. They will still be crystal clear i'd imagine.

    Not that appearance matters.

Furthermore, does "extra hopped" mean extra dry hops, or does it refer to the proverbial "shit ton" of whirlpool hops supposedly required to get a hazy beer?

I guess we'll just have to wait and see what we're dealing with here.

Not just unfiltered but also "extra hopped", hopefully that means more dry hopping!?

Maybe more flavor, remains to be seen, but I am skeptical

We've had some pros chime in on other threads that if a brewery really wanted to, they could compensate ahead of time for whatever filtration strips out. It's probably not commonly done, though, due to logistical issues of having different recipes for packaged product and draught.

In any event, yeah, I bet this one winds up with more hop presence than filtered.

I was never a huge fan of sculpin I find d it to be a tad sweet for my tastes albeit I'll still say well crafted. The pineapple was my favorite of them. I'd try it maybe unfiltered will add a creaminess that'll compliment that sweetness I taste.

Looking forward to this. The original unfiltered "Enjoy By" was substantially better than the regular version (although recent releases were disappointing).

    This should be interesting

Sculpin in cans, less than a month old is worth the price IMO. Unfiltered you say? Count me in...

I like it, and drink it quite often on tap. Have only bought a few 6 packs over the years. But then again I don't buy that many IPA's by the 6 pack, usually only Lagunitas products. Will grab a 6r of this if I find it

    Nice move BP....

Definitely want to give this one a whirl.

Wonder if they couldn't help but try this after seeing the Lagunitas Born Yesterday frenzy roll out across the country.

No, it's just a lot easier than it used to be to find something nearly/just as good that costs a lot less.

Sculpin is a good beer, but there's nothing about it that justifies my purchasing it at $15/6 when I have a handful of other beers in the same quality neighborhood for $10/6.

Is unfiltered beer more sensitive/delicate than filtered?

    Sculpin is dry hopped

I can report that bottle conditioned beers help maintain beer stability better than filtered beer. The live yeast in bottle conditioned beer acts like an anti-oxidant. Whether you can extend this aspect to unfiltered beer I am uncertain.

    Cheers!

I think this is a good idea. With a constant barrage of special release IPA's, I don't buy Sculpin as much as I used to.
