I have been wondering what the drifference between Ballast Point Big eye IPA and Sculpin IPA. I have noticed the Sculpin Cost more than Big eye i assume because there are more ingredients in sculpin than Big Eye just wondering both the beers are great.
Big eye is much more malt forward, with a different hop profile. I find the Big eye to be more earthy, floral citrusy, while Sculpin, to me, is lighter, more bitter and more fruity. Also, Big Eye 6.8% abv Sculpin 7.0% abv Personally, I like Sculpin more, but you'll find most will tell you the same.
I totally agree with you i enjoy Sculpin better but i wonder why it cost more and is there some other beers in the texas market like sculpin?
Perhaps the hop variety they use cost more; could be using hole cone hops for sculpin and pellets/ extract for Big Eye. Also, since the beer is so popular compared to big eye, it would only make sense to price it slightly higher, having the beer cost more money to make anyway. I dunno. Talking out of my ass.
Last time i went there and went through the tour and the like i asked a similar question. turns out Sculpin has multiple dry hopping additions to the point where a 60 barrel batch was yielding 45 barrels or so. That WAS factored into the price at one point. Also though they had just gotten a centrifuge which was allowing them to get more of their beer back out of the hops, so it was around 52 barrel yield. Even then the size of the centrifuge made it worth close to a $250k... I know i should check my facts before saying this, but i do not remember Big Eye IPA being dry hopped... Those are some reasons as to why Sculpin is much more expensive... Cheers!
Texas market - ruination, palate wrecker, (512) IPA, deep Ellum IPA, I tried Karbach's Hopadillo last weekend, maybe some Saint Arnold Endevour on your shelfs. All those have a fruity taste to them. The 512 and Deep Ellum are fast becoming favorites but the FT Saucer has Scuplin on draft most nights (at $3 it's a steal). Always feel free to send me a PM if you have further questions, I may be able to help track down some suds for you
You could be right but when i see Big Eye for 9.49 a six then see Sculpin for 15+ makes me wonder why
Thanks i will do so also i have had Endevour and it is Rockin i live in the Arlington and alawys looking for good places that is close to me. Deep Ellum is good only have had there double brown stout and it was taste have not been to FT Saucer in Fort Worth two years 512 i like but cant see to find who has it and were i can get my growler filled except world beer company in dallas.
Caves in Arlington has (512) for the summer months and they rotate Deep Ellum. Their sister bar Ozzie Rabbits has similar taps. As far as growler fills, I'm pretty sure it's illegal for any place not designated a brew-pub to do fills in Tarrant county (or at least I'm not aware of any place currently doing fills). Keep your fingers crossed that Jester King keeps up the good fight and enables breweries to distribute directly.
Being in San Diego County, I used to have to luck out to get my hands on Sculpin. But now it's everywhere; and because of that, I usually pass on it because of the price.
Green Flash West Coast IPA is similar to Sculpin IMO. Both on tap at the FW Saucer so do a taste test if you go.
Fresh Sculpin on draft is heaven, one of my absolute favorites. Here on the east coast, we get 22s of Sculpin which doesn't even come close. Only had Big Eye in the bottle and I didn't think it was in the same league as draft Sculpin.
Sculpin could be called a mango IPA, there's huge mango flavor there. Love it! Big eye seems more traditional, less interesting.
Great observation. For us west coasters who can get fresh Sculpin bottles regularly I agree 100% that it doesnt compare to fresh Sculpin on tap, it's so amazingly different from the bottle. Cheers.....
