To tell the truth, it wasn't brought up while I was in the conversation. The topic was about the timelines that are in the article, and the cans/bottles that I mentioned above.

Stupid MN laws...another revenue stream going to Wisconsin. Who is going to set up a taxi service so we can go to Dave's, The Nova and Barley Johns on Sundays?

Brew Pubs cannot disto their beer, they can only sell growlers. Except on Sundays. Thanks Teamsters

Looks like this is going to turn into a "Poor MN" thread, which was not my intent.

I'm just happy to see another small brewery expand. I could care less what state.
John looked really happy, so I'm happy for him. Christ, it's not like New Richmond is very far from the New Brighton location anyway.

You've gotta think BIG, Brother! Met Council needs to build a commuter rail extension ala the North Star line from middle-western Wisconsin all the way to The Cities~! Make it a high speed deal, and it'll be a cinch to finance this pipe dream of mine. Why, just think of the tourist dollars and taxable jobs that will be generated in the process!

And you didn't think that would happen?
You put way to much faith in this forum.

It is awesome that he is expanding and going into new directions. It is just a bummer that it cannot be here. That is my point

Here is an article from earlier this year

    Thanks for the other article.
    It answers this question:
"Barley John's still won't be able to distribute beer in Minnesota, but will sell in Wisconsin. Moore said Minnesota residents will be able to buy his beer in border towns."

I do wish they could distribute here, but it doesn't change my original point much, as I'm still happy to see him grow.

I also thought I remembered John saying that the can format would be the same as Surly's; 4 packs of pints.

Why won't they be able to distribute to Mn?

Maybe in the next decade or so MN will be with the 21st century in liquor laws and they will be able to distribute to MN...

I'm guessing that it has something to do with their Brew Pub here...just guessing. They could always hire a disto here; TG will have to do the same thing in MN

Or they can simply choose not distribute all in MN where a distributor would take a cut of their profits.

A brewpub in Minnesota cannot distribute beer outside that establishment. They can only distribute to other locations that are owned and operated by that same business entity. It has nothing to due with distributors. In fact, there was a bill that came up around the "taproom" bill, which would have allowed MN brewpubs to distribute. Unfortunately, after Summit, Surly, and everyone else got what they wanted they let that bill die and chose not to support Barely John's.

    But they could distribute
But we are talking about their soon to be production brewery in New Richmond Wisconsin, not their brewpub in New Brighton Mn.

So they can distribute in Mn, as long as they use a distributer? Like every other out is state brewery that distributes here?

Like all answers to questions about legality the answer is it depends. As a producer he cannot own a resale establishment, hence Kieran had to sell his restaurants to own and distribute 2 gingers. This is another aspect of the three tier system that is overlooked. You can only participate on one tier, brewpubs being a rare exception with limited on-site sales exceptions for the products they produce.

That's what I'd assume, but again, liquor laws are pretty unique. Its also worth noting that if you go with a distributor, they take about a 30% cut, which is a pretty big decision.
