I was introduced to the Barley Wine style last year (Bigfoot) and loved it! I went on a small buying spree this winter. I have not yet tried any of these but am looking for suggestion. If you were only going to drink one of these now, and cellar the others for next year / later, which would it be? I realize many probably haven't had Revolution, but it's BA in Woodford Reserve. Ideally would have bought two of each, but availability/price prevented that. Thanks!

    • Sucaba

Haven't had the other 3 but Sucaba is freakin awesome. Bigfoot is an American Barley so more hoppy than an English (e.g. Sucaba).
For American's I really dig Dogfish Olde School fresh or aged imo, Doggie Claws, GnarleyWine, Old Ruffian all with some age on em'.
Some great English aside from Sucaba - Mother of all Storms, Arctic Devil, Insanity (all barrel aged and great out of the chute to me), and aged JW Lees.

I tried the Revolution one 2 weeks ago and it was amazing. Some barley wine can edge a bit too sweet for me, but not this one. Now I wish I would have bought it when I had the chance. Luckily one of my brothers has a bottle so I'll just have to finagle an invite when he opens it.

Oak aged backburner is easy to find and comparatively cheap. I personally have a bottle of Sucaba and behemoth aging, but when I have a thirst for barley wines I just pick up a backburner.

All of those beers can be cellared .Ba Bigfoot is a bit hot right now so I'd put that one away. Of the remaining bottles,2 are BA. I personally believe that if you want to fully appreciate the barrel affect of a BA beer you drink them fresh. If you want that effect to mellow to a degree you age them.
Behemoth is hoppy now and will mellow with time.
If it were me,I'd drink the Sucaba now. That beer drinks great now and I dong think there's much room for improvement with age.

It is by no means my favorite style, but I quite like Old Foghorn, Old Horizontal (on hiatus), and Blithering Idiot

If you haven't tried any of them, don't cellar them. Drink them now.

Buy a bunch of bottles of Sucaba as you can. Drink some now, and age some. It's my favortie BW and you won't be disappointed.

This and always this! If you only get 1 bottle, drink it fresh. If you get more than 1, lay some down if you think it may benefit from age.

Put some age on that Y2K! It is good fresh but it is phenomenal with about 5yrs.

Sierra Nevada Bigfoot with a little age. Pour it in a snifter, let it warm up, and enjoy. Good stuff.

    Also, some other Barleywine recommendations:

    Bell's Third Coast
    Green Flash BW
    Great Divide Old Ruffian

If I was going to drink only one of them now it would be Behemoth (in fact I had a 2013 last night). Like most FFF stuff it's pretty hoppy for the style and drinks a lot like a DIPA.
