I've lived in IL now since July and I have been enjoying trying all the new beers at my local sources. What'd I'd like to find more of is these barley wines and/or barrel aged ales and stouts etc.

My favorite thus far is Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale and their pumpkin version of the same. I see they also have a stout I'd love to try. Any other recommendations?

    Thanks!

Revolution Straight Jacket is a delicious barrel aged barleywine. A bit pricey but readily available.

Upland brewing barrel chested barleywine is a good, reasonably priced, easy to find barrel aged barleywine. Straight jacket is the best I've had but unless you have some deep pockets, not something you'll be drinking on a regular basis.

In a little over a month it'll be bourbon county time in Chicago. You'll definitely want to get your hands on some of that.

Pipeworks just released Reaper V Unicorn a few weeks ago. It's not BA but is a terrific rye barleywine. You should be able to find bombers of it still available.

Finally tried that on tap this year and was blown away. Is there a certain time of year this is on shelves in Chicago?

Where are you seeing this on the shelf? Or did you mean readily available as in when its released its easy to find?

This is probably my favorite BA barley wine.

Oops! I just realized I posted this in the Great Lakes region, when in reality I am in the Midwest (Just East of St. Louis), but I will still be looking for those mentioned!

Where East of St. Louis are you? London Balling is a really nice (albeit pricey) BA english barley wine from Against the Grain. I know Deans Liquor in Collinsville had 5 or 6 cans as of last night. Also, another really nice BA barley wine I've seen in Southern IL would be Central Waters' BA barley wine and Brewers Reserve Barley Wine (saw that one at Friar Tuck in Edwardsville).

I saw it at Extra Value Liquors in Rogers Park a few weeks ago...not sure if it's still there b/c I hate that place (it's 2 blocks from my house so sometimes I relent).

I feel like it's on shelves pretty much year round though; for whatever reason it doesn't fly off the shelf despite it's deliciousness.

I'm out near Highland. I have been trying to find the time to get to Friar Tucks, but it sounds like Deans is also worth the stop if I'm in the area??

eh, I don't know that I'd go out of my way for Deans. Small selection - their IPAs are OLD. but they do occasionally get some nice BA stuff that sits - it doesn't sell as there just isn't the market for that kind of beer in Collinsville.

No, you originally posted this in the Midwest forum but only mentioned that you live in Illinois in your original post. Someone likely requested for this thread to be moved to the Great Lakes since that is where Illinois falls under on this site. I bet if you redid the posting specifying the St. Louis area it would stick over there.

Ahh, no matter! I can't imagine the offers differ that much??

There is certainly a difference in distribution between Illinois and Missouri.

Whole Foods in Oak Park still had a few bottles on the shelf tonight. Thought about getting one, but I've been burned in the past by a couple of their deep wood series beers, and honestly I'm still a little pissed that Revolution never responded to my inquiries. Is this still drinking well? Should I put my grudge aside and bite the bullet?

Thanks! I actually will likely stop in there to grab one. I bought the last one at my local shop about a month and a half ago, drank it and it was sublime.

As fas as I know the infections with the deep wood series was with the 'gene series and Very Mad Cow (I still get a kick that a beer named mad cow got infected). Nothing with Deth's Tar or Striaght Jacket.

Not sure if you would be able to get it where you live, but I'll chime in with my 2 cents and say that Central Waters Brewer's Reserve Bourbon Barrel Barleywine is a solid drink. It comes out February-ish and I believe it goes out to their entire distribution footprint. If you aren't able to buy it, it should be relatively easy to trade for.
