I bought some older barleywines recently and opened 3 of them in the last week or so with mixed results.

Old Knucklehead from 2008 was drinkable but way past it's prime.

Barrel Roll #4 from 2013 was a bit long in the tooth but enjoyable.

Red wine barrel aged Old Guardian from 2013 is drinking great right now!

I too wish more Wheat wines were available.
I brewed a 12.7% beast last year and it was fantastic!
More breweries should try their IPA soaked hands at some.
    And White Barleywine, WTF?
That sounds as dumb as a White Stout. One of the most gimmicky beers ever! Yak.
I'm still waiting for the "Session Barleywine."

I'm with you on more wheatwine. I've had some great pale barleywines though, Helldorado from Firestone for example. I think the style guidelines for barleywine are a lot more forgiving than for stout? How do you feel about black barleywine?

It would depend on what grains they use to make it "black.". Too much black patent would throw it off, but a de-bittered black or a black wheat could work.
Celebrator pushes the darkness boundary a bit.
I wish I could get ahold of that Firestone Walker. They make solid brews.

Jim Anderson……not sure if he still owns the pub, the Anderson. I think I read he was getting out of the business a few years back.

    Enjoy

Of course not! Is a Session IPA really an IPA?

I think you missed my terrible pun. Barelywine not barleywine. My apologies to the board.:flushed:

And yes, session IPAs are an abomination.

Ever since the term "India pale ale" existed, examples comparable in strength to modern American "session IPAs" have existed.

Sure, pale ales come in various strengths. My beef is with the marketing gimmick of over hopping a 4% ABV pale ale to point that it is a bitter mess and calling it a session IPA because IPA has to be on the label or it won't sell.

A coffee barleywine from Arrow Lodge called Arrow Press. I like the kitschy label.

This drinks more like an imperial brown ale than a barleywine. There is a sweet nuttiness to the malts that works well with the medium roast coffee. I'm also getting a little vanilla and black bread crusts. I'm diggin' it.

I reviewed Põhjala Triple Barrel Barley Wine last Sunday on NBS(W).
You can find my comments here.

I liked this beer a lot and I rated it:
    L: 4.0 | S: 4.75 | T: 4.5 | F: 4.0 | O: 4.5 | Rating: 4.48

I closed my review/commentary with this:

"I suppose it is classified as an American-style Barley Wine on this site because of how far it strays from the traditional English-style. The American-style Barley Wine is a much broader style, allowing for deviations such as this. It is black, sweet, complex, and boozy."

Since then, I've been wondering about what ARE the boundaries for an American-style Barley Wine? And, if you have had this beer before, what do you think? Is it a barley wine? Or, is it a stout?

I know, the brewer calls it a barley wine, etc. But, is it really a barley wine?

Aside from the color, did it have any other stout-like qualities? Tasted blind, what do you think you would have called it?

As @Beer_Economicus says maybe it's a black barleywine, they seem to be becoming more common. Have you tried any? I have one of these in the queue and I'm looking forward to it.

Reportedly The Anderson Hotel was up for auction a couple of years ago but according to the post below (Nov. 2021), Jim is still the owner of the hotel:

“The owner’s take on Philadelphia style food is spot on. The menu is small enough that it’s easy to choose a dish without getting overwhelmed by variety. The food itself is perfectly cooked, with beautiful presentation. Unfortunately we couldn’t choose the entire menu, but will come back again to make a serious dent in it.
Jim and his staff are personable and knowledgeable about their offerings, and Jim’s knowledge of whisky is phenomenal. He also knows a fair bit about music too!
Added to my list of favourite eateries.”

That Hammerhead was incredible fresh. I wish they still make this stuff, but it looks like they aren't doing any Barrel Roll stuff anymore.
