Getting into my first Barleywine from Burial, an English style aged in Cognac, Calvados, and Bourbon Barrels released last October. Below is an excerpt from my review:

Nose is nice, this is very dark fruit forward.
Taste is very nice. The large malt base and Cognac give notes of figs and brown sugar. Getting some hints of pear and apple from the Calvados and the bourbon barrel lends some vanilla sweetness. While the bourbon is not overly perceptible, it does act to balance most of the sweetness very appropriate for the style.
Mouthfeel is very nice, medium to large bodied and very smooth.

This was a very enjoyable sipping experience; gave it a rating of 4.29.

    Cheers!
    Tom

Got an AMAZING box from @FBarber today, time to dig in. I got lots from Revolution, which makes me so very, very happy, so let's try one of those. Mineshaft Gap, barleywine aged in Cognac barrels.

Canned in January 2018. Oh man this so smooth and mellow, seductive it is. The grape notes are prominent, ranging from sweet and fresh to musty and boozy. In the background I get smoked nuts, brown sugar, and dried fruits. The finish bring a nice oak-y tingle with some tobacco and a warm exhale. Never had this fresh, but this is drinking phenomenally well at 5 years. Thanks so much for this @FBarber

Having a Ryeway courtesy of @FBarber while opening 2 amazing boxes from @Beersnake1
I am a very happy BA right now:slight_smile:

This is every bit as good as I remember, maybe even better. The caramel and toffee play so well off the rye. Big booze, big sweetness, big love for this always.

I'll post a picture on the hauls thread. Eleven (11!) new to me barleywines from 5 different countries including Russia! Thanks Tim!!

Big thanks to @CarolinaCardinals for this one. Appalachian Walker from Olde Hickory Brewing in NC. Aged in brandy barrels, and comes in at 12.04% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a nice dark brown with an inch of tan head. Looks great! The nose is fantastic. Immediately picking up brandy, raisins, toffee, plums, and big malts.

The taste is wonderful. Toffee, molasses, brown sugar, super smooth brandy, raisins, honey, and a candy sweetness. This is just so smooth. Sweet, but not too sweet. Slightly boozy, but not too boozy. Nice malts and dark fruit. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, a bit sticky, and comes with a nice sweet toffee aftertaste. Thanks, Tom!

    Great article thanks!

    From the article-
“Black barleywine” may have begun to emerge as the dominant nomenclature in 2017, when Deschutes released an experimental beer that would later become Black Mirror—a barrel-aged version of their Mirror Mirror Barleywine that took on the roast and chocolate characteristics of a stout. The beer proudly wore the “black barleywine” moniker en route to a World Class rating on BeerAdvocate.

I think Sierra Nevada might deserve some of this credit.

Here is the description for the anniversary beer Sierra Nevada released in 2010, Jack and Ken's ale

Jack McAuliffe was the first American "micro" brewer. His tiny New Albion Brewery in Sonoma, California inspired countless dreamers to start small-scale breweries of their own. Jack agreed to guest brew this very special ale with us in honor of our 30th anniversary. This Black Barleywine Ale is a nod to the legendary ales New Albion served at their legendary summer solstice parties. Rich with bittersweet and roasted malt flavors, balanced with whole-cone American hops, this robust ale should age gracefully for years.

Getting into my barleywine bounty from @Beersnake1 , thanks Tim! Paragon 2021 from Lervig Akteibryggeri in Finland.

Well this is quite a treat! Lots of caramel and charred toffee at the center of things, with chocolate, toasted nuts, dates, and more subtleties at the edges. The Finnish adds a wonderful vinous note at the boozy exhale. Thanks so much for the chance to try this gem Tim!
