Enjoying a 2017 edition of JW Lees Port Cask aged. This is very mellow and relaxing with notes of dark fruit, wheat bread, brown sugar, finishing with a touch of apple from the back-end hopping. Very nice, rated 4.2.

    Cheers!

Bourbon barrels! Can’t go wrong my friend. I like bourbon and I like stouts aged in bourbon barrels. Hell, I would probably like Pepsi aged in bourbon barrels.

I’m with you there! This Barleywine from Burial was aged in Cognac, Calvados and Bourbon barrels! My buddy’s were a little hesitant at first about it because it’s 13.5 abv, but it was so smooth! They loved it!

From @starshockey9 a nice GI 2 year reserve BBBW. Wet cherry wood aroma. Clear burnt amber color. Prominent barrel characteristics, with a bold spirit-esque bourbon profile to the base brew. Bright alcohol burn up front with quick warming sensations. Mouthfeel is toward medium, noticeably less sticky once the alcohol runs up to clear the palate. It’s not exactly fitting an American or English BW profile to me, as neither hops nor sweet caramel flavors are very noticeable. That’s okay, just different. A very enjoyable sipper after a six hour stint of yard work.

Waiting on a Breakthrough from Spring House Brewing in Lancaster, PA. Compliments of @DIM in a barleywine trade a while back. This is a black barleywine brewed with vanilla. Comes in at 13% ABV.

Poured from a can at fridge temp. Pours very black but with the typical consistency of a barleywine. Almost no head. The nose is splendid. Blackberries, blueberry pie, quite a bit of vanilla, caramel, and a nice layer of glazed doughnuts. Can't wait to sip this one!

The taste is fantastic. The vanilla comes through right away, and it's definitely one of the most (if not THE most) dominant flavors on this one. I love vanilla, so this is just fine with me. This is accompanied by lovely smooth notes of blueberry, toffee, slight maple, vanilla chocolate, and a hint of plum. So easy to drink and the ABV seems non-existent. Another dangerous brew!

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and the aftertaste is mostly vanilla and dark fruit. Lovely barleywine!

Thanks so much for sending this one, Dan!

That brewery started out in a small barn out in the middle of nowhere. I used to make the trek out for growler fills before the kids came. Glad you liked it!

I couldn’t pull the Tavour trigger on that one. Rev Deep Woods anything is usually spectacular, but that sounds like it was supposed to be a Mortalis Hydra fruited sour.

This definitely didn't reach Mortalis heights (depths? Why do I like those so much??) , it wasn't as fruity and definitely not sour. Worth trying at least once I'd say.

Now that GI beast you just posted on the other hand, I'm really looking forward to revisiting that one. I think it'll age like a champ.

Also sad to report I suffered a Tavour relapse last week. Opened my first crate in a year and a half. Dammit.

You aren't missing anything. LOVE Straight Jacket and didn't buy any of this one after tasting it. We didn't even want to finish the 8oz pour we had.

Oh, broke that seal, did you? I was avoiding them because I have to travel 2 hrs each way to get mine (no more local carrier), but then they had some Transient BW I “needed” to have, then a stout… It’s @HIGHPA ’s fault I like Transient so much now. LOL!

Yeah, some brewers are going way over the experimental / trendy line. I’m seeing all sorts of strange stuff going into BWs lately. No. Immediately no.

Just this one last crate and then I'm out. I can totally stop anytime I want.

Every now and then a weird one REALLY works. Double Baked from Tree House is amazing for example. For the most part I'm with you though.
