Tree House: Mighty - Oak. American barleywine conditioned in oak barrels. This has been available for at least 6 months now. I’ve had it fresh and it’s morphed into an almost amber hoppy lager. I liked it better fresh, but will be getting more in a couple weeks, along with the original version. I want to see where this goes after multiple years of aging

Totally unintentional but one year ago today a bomb hit my porch, courtesy of @Beersnake , and Baller Baracus from Mason Aleworks and friends is the last fragment of the bomb. This is the first EBW aged in Mead Barrels, and it comes across as sweet heat to me as the first sip was an eye opener being at 16.0%. Thanks Tim for the opportunity to try!
    Cheers!

I haven’t had an MOAS since the old 22oz bottles with the gold foil. This thing is sticky, chewy and gooey. Boozy hot and complex. Which is not to say I’m not enjoying it—I’ll just need to pace myself. Tons of figs, dates, and smoky vanilla. Cheers!

This one was unique for sure...
An all-time classic, I miss having this around.

Opening another from @Beersnake thanks Tim! Zoomie Catcher from Fair State co-op. American barleywine with chinook and cascade hops.

Great looking beer with a massive head that slowly fades to sticky, lumpy foam. This is quite nice, bright and vibrant tasting hop candy. Sugary caramel joins orange candies and faint pine primarily. Maybe a little cherry too. A bit of bitterness at the back end balances this out well. Not many straight up American b-wine to find these days and this is a good one, worth seeking out. Thanks as always Tim!

Green Preservation Society from Grimm. Barleywine aged for 2 years in Madeira casks. Comes in at 12% ABV. Received this from @DIM in a recent trade.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours without much carbonation. No head, but I do see a few tiny bubbles rising so it's not completely still. Dark murky brown color. The nose is red wine, sherry, and maybe some sweet toffee.

The taste is really interesting. Again, getting big notes of red wine. Some Armagnac slides in here as well. Toffee is there, but it's not strong. This is all barrel. I personally really enjoy it, but I could see it being a bit polarizing. It's like a beer-wine hybrid to me. Thanks for sending this one, Dan! Really nice to taste something different!

My favorite Grimm barleywineby a wide margin has been xxxx, the one with no barrels. That's very strange coming from me, I LOVE barrels. Hope I sent you one. I haven't tried this one yet, but I won't be too eager to buy barreled barleywine from them going forward.

I look forward to hearing what you think of this one. I am also a fan of barrels, and this one certainly showcases the Madeira barrels.

Jacky O’s Endolith - English Barleywine aged in bourbon barrels. It’s good. And a bit different. But I prefer a classic from JW Lees:

Yeah, the bottles I got popped up in Anaheim, so I'm assuming SoCal got a bunch of bottles. I need to try my other bottle!

At Helltown Tap Room, Helltown barleywine. 12% English style with soft mouthfeel. Malty, very light hop bite, raisin, caramel and fig. Well hidden ABV and lighter than expected. Very nice. Cheers.

Just feels like a Barleywine kinda day here.

Wasn't crazy about this when it was fresh. Just had an astringent bitterness that I found off putting. Decided to just hide the rest of the 4pk for a while. I think 3 years did this one a lot of good, at least for my tastes. Cocoa powder in the nose. Smells more like a big stout. Flavor is rich and sweet, dark fruit & leather. There's some tannic quality that separates it from a lot of BWs. The bitterness is still present in the finish but much less so than fresh. There is still a hint of the assertive bitterness in the aftertaste that doesn't play well for me. Overall it's tasty, but I won't be dying to drink the last 2 bottles in the basement.

...after completing this tax returns, this beer does a fine job of soothing my addled mind (if not the pocketbook)...

Cellarmaker Brewing Co. -- Hard Cut
Blend of barrel aged barleywine and munichwine ales
    ABV: 16%; pouring temperature: 49 °F; bottling info: n/a

The pour looks dark brown and clear, producing a relatively thick, tan head. Incredibly rich aroma; dark roasted grains with notes of roasted nuts, barrel wood, charred caramel, and a bit of boozy waft. Immensely dense and complex flavors; dark chocolate and caramel nougat; brown sugar; roasted nuts; a fine boozy undercurrent; deep overall sweetness but not cloying. Heavy mouthfeel; rich and chewy on the palate; excellent alcohol warmth courses through the residual sugars.

This is likely my first experience with munichwines. While the beer is actually a blend of a barrel aged barleywine and two barerel aged munichwines, I'm really intrigued to know more about the munichwine style in general. In the meantime, this barrel-aged blended barleywine/munichwine hybrid is simply a killer. There are layers of flavor and feel to this beer and the aroma is to die for. This is just one fantastic mammoth dark ale.

    --------------------------------------

...and, on a side note, I will be keeping an eye out for munichwines...I'd love to find a (some) standalone iterations of that style now that I have a hint of their potential...

I enjoyed that one, too. Brad Clark of Private Press says: “Munichwine is a new sub-style of barleywine that I created quietly at Private Press throughout the pandemic. The genesis of this new beer style is rooted in my admiration for both barleywine and Munich malt.”

A Reddit user expands that the substyle is: “Pale Barleywine with Munichmalt at its core. Gives a more cookie-like flavor.”
