Drinking great. Tons of toffee and caramel. Just sweet and mouth without being overly sweet. Cheers!!

2017 Thomas Hardy's Ale. This pours a nice murky brown. Settles out nicely with a ruby tinge to it. The nose is bursting with toffee, plums, figs, honey, and maple. Maybe a touch of leather.

The taste is lovely. The toffee is still there, but there is definitely more bitterness on the taste. A hoppy presence. Leather, slight oxidation, dry, oak, spice, custard, prunes, and a bit of maple. Really nice!

At 17.2% this thing is massive. Pours out like the liquid at the bottom of an open top dumpster. Very sharp, even after 2.5 years in the bottle and another year in the barrel. Almost has a slight sourness on the back end, which has me wondering if it’s starting to turn sideways. I figured at this abv, it would be fine after 10 years or more. I have really bad luck with aging beers.

Opened this while watching the Simpsons movie with the family. Seems I liked it a lot more than the very kind @Beersnake who sent this my way. My first from Modern Times and it's a gem.

Yeah this is intensely sweet but not in an obnoxiously sugary way. Strong molasses and concentrated raisin notes along with plenty of sweet, sweet bourbon make for a joyous riot of barleywine bliss that cleaves relentlessly to the palate. I mean that literally, the body is quite sticky and the flavors linger long at the roof of the mouth and the back of the gums. Absolutely loving this thank you Tim!

Enjoying a purchase of from last October as part of the Stout/Barleywine BIF, a Rye BA English Barleywine from Fonta Flora in Nebo, NC. This is quite nice. Raisin, toffee, and caramel are in the base with a nice vanilla-rye spiciness from the barrel.
    Cheers!

Aged 7 months in bourbon barrels. This is hitting all the marks for me. The barrel addition is subtle; a nice blend with the alcohol heat. Nice reddish-brown color. The nose has toffee and leather, which follows in the taste. Slightly syrupy feel. Really loving this and glad I splurged for two.

The base (a blend) was much better. Additional servings did not change my mind.

The site tells me it's my seventh anniversary. Guess I'll drink a good one. Bourbon Barrel Aged Brick Kiln Barleywine by Jackie O’s. Cheers.

I guess it's about an 1 1/2 of this white stuff, hopefully it'll melt quickly.

10 Year Barleywine from Cellarmaker. Here's the blend:

20% barleywine aged for 8 months in Savage and Cooke Lip Service Rye whiskey barrels
30% barleywine aged for 16 months in Weller Special Reserve Bourbon barrels
30% barleywine aged for 16 months in Stagg Jr. Bourbon Barrels
20% Imperial Stout aged for 25 months in Heaven Hill 10 year barrels.

Comes in at 16.2% ABV. Poured at fridge temp. Pours almost still - zero head. Nice a dark.

The nose brings notes of intense salted caramel, dark chocolate, rye, bourbon, roasted malts, a bit of black licorice, figs, and prunes. The barrel is really crazy intense on this one.

The taste is equally as intense as the nose. Tons of toffee, bourbon, bourbon, and bourbon! The rye does come through for sure. Oak, Dutch drops (salted licorice candy), vanilla, plums, malts, and brown sugar.

The mix of barleywine and stout is always interesting. The 20% stout definitely comes through, but I would definitely describe this as a barleywine. Lovely bottle with a nice long finish. Glad to have tried it.

If it weren’t for the chronically poorly lit pictures I take you’d see it’s a gorgeous copper color, close to the label. This thing smells so caramel I’d almost suspect hijinks. Taste is a bit less aggressive.
Overall, pretty solid, especially now that it comes in a 4x16pk that costs less than its bomber format.

If an Old Ale qualifies, I guess a BA strong ale counts, Orin from Half Acre.

I attended a 7 course barleywine dinner on Saturday at Cartel brewing in Lancaster. This was their first time attempting something like this and they succeeded spectacularly. They sold all 62 tickets before either the beer or food menus were announced.

My wife and I were seated at a table with very funny and interesting strangers, the three and a half hours flew by. The food was fabulous as were most of the barleywines. Second Sins and a Deal with the Devil were my 2 favorites. @Spade start saving, they said they intend to do this again! I thought it was a good value, seven generous pours plus a bottle to bring home to go along with the amazing food. The charcuterie and cheese supplied by Mandros especially stood out.

While this wasn't actually a buffet setting, the large pours (4-6oz per I believe) coupled with the fact that my wife doesn't particularly care for barleywine made this at least a buffet-adjacent setting in that there was more available than I could possibly hope to drink. @CarolinaCardinals I did not perform all that well. While I did sadly leave some delicious beer undrunk on the table, I did suffer my first hangover in over 20 years yesterday. The 17% ADWTD was the last beer served and my ability to make reasonable choices was at least somewhat impaired by that point and I enjoyed all 8-12oz that my wife and I were served. I regret nothing.

As well you shouldn’t! :sunglasses: Sounds like a fantastic night. There was a place “near” us that regularly did special beer dinners and an annual Sour celebration. It came with a presentation of each beer. AND having married a designated driver, who enjoys spoiling me, certainly made it all the better. Prost to you! :beers:
