...thanks, Tom...I do like to go back and revisit beers over time, especially when first impressions are very good or very bad...for the Doggie Claws, I figure the various years of issue and consuming will likely give differing impressions...so many variables at play even from hour to hour and day to day...

...I figure any of my reviews and impressions are never definitive, only reflective of the moment...

Kicking off the holiday weekend right. This is hoppier than I expected. Has a bit of red wine taste as well. Very nice.

I had my second one of this release last weekend. For me, OG was always an American Barleywine on the hoppier side. For this release, it seemed a little less hoppier. I should have bought another 4 pack. Oh well...

What's up barleywine lovers! I'm drinking Fernie from Aslin. This is a wheat wine aged in bourbon barrels and conditioned on coffee and vanilla. 12.75% ABV.

Pours a very muddy/murky with almost zero head. The nose is really nice. Tons of caramel and vanilla. Light coffee, bourbon, and more caramel. Dang - quite the caramel bomb on the nose.

The taste is really nice. The coffee really comes through here. The caramel is there, but it's not the only thing going on. Vanilla, slight coconut, milk chocolate, malts, cream, light bourbon, and a slight oak note. I'm really loving this one. It's super smooth and not very sweet. Rarely do I taste this nice level of integration. The flavors combine to form a really nice smooth taste.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a wonderful caramel and vanilla aftertaste. Great wheat wine overall.

I ordered a dozen Dom '23 from HotD, never tried it but looking forward to it after hearing about prior years. Likely the last run, although I said that on my last HotD order back in March of 2022. Who knows. Will also degen on BCBS this Friday, like normal.

Double Barrel V.S.O.R. from Revolution. Regular 'ol Ryeway sets the bar pretty high, looking forward to this one.

The aroma is deep and enticing, a humidor with a glass of rye next to it is my first thought. I also found earthy vanilla, mellow toffee, and plenty of oaky/rye bite.

There is more oak/tobacco/rye spice on the tongue then in the nose and they all cut into the boozy sweetness a bit more than I'd like. Overall the flavors are just incredibly dense. This is another Deep Wood winner but I can't say I like this better than regular Ryeway.

First time having this. I'm coming to the realization that I prefer English Barleywine over American. I enjoy hoppy beers but it's getting a bit played out for me.

Happy GobbleGobble on this turkey day, of which I won't be having any of today. Bought a small bird who preferred to be frozen over being grilled. Bought the bird Sunday, still hard as a rock.

Boulevard's 35th is a barrel aged blend of barley wine and imperial brown.

Sugary fruits come to mind first, various apple forward desserts, sweet dried fruits, and even a little pineapple upside down cake. Light brown sugar and soft booze round things out. Pretty dang good but it's not my favorite from the fine folks at Boulevard. It's just a bit too sweet. My wife likes it, so I'll let her finish the pack.

Red Daisy - Masterworks Volume 3 Q3 from New Groove Artisan Brewery in South Carolina.

    From the brewery:

Black Barleywine aged in Blackened Metallic barrels (Madeira barrels used to finish Willet Family Estate bourbon). After 23 months, we transferred this beer to a 10-Yr McKenna barrel and stashed it away for another 7 months. 16.15% ABV. Bottled in June of 2024.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours black with almost no head. The nose is burnt toffee, light smoke, molasses, brown sugar, light black licorice, rye spice, pepper, oak, bourbon.

The taste is fantastic. Again, some pipe tobacco/smoke, charred wood, roasted malts, burnt toffee, caramelized sugar, molasses, figs, Crème Brûlée, custard, slight cinnamon, Armagnac, vanilla, an bourbon. Lovely.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with an intense aftertaste of wine, toffee, and vanilla.

The BCBS Prop offerings can be an interesting ride, and this year’s iteration, which is actually a barleywine, is no exception. Sweet and sour fruit notes, complemented by caramel and toasty molasses notes, and a nice bit of Guajillo chiles combine to make a delicious beer, IMHO.

Previously, I would have judged this as bad without trying. But, after experiencing what Tree House has done with barrel aged barleywines with crazy adjuncts, I would absolutely like to try this years prop

Found a pack of 2018 Central Waters barleywine this week, not sure what conditions it was stored under but I went for it.

It's held up surprisingly well, lots of sweet and sticky boozy caramel.
