So after about 20 hours my 1.130 barley wine that I pitched onto a cake of S-04 and aerated it with pure oxygen for ~60 seconds is fermenting away happily at 64F (temp probe attached to outside of carboy, insulated) is blowing off like crazy right now (lost ~2L I would guess based upon the depth of the fluid in my chest freezer). Never seen such a blow off, and I used a pile of fermcap too!

Regardless, I would normally hit it with more O2 right now, but I am wondering if it is worthwhile or not to do so based upon the overly healthy fermentation. Thoughts? Opinions?

EDIT: Forgot to note that I pitched on a fresh full cake, and according to yeast calc it was likely ~ 800 billion cells , or 2x what I needed!

The only thing O2 will give you is more robust fermentation . . . which sounds like is not a problem. Plus, the O2 dissolves/metabolizes out pretty quickly in all cases, so my opinion is stay the course. I do recommend videoing this massive blowoff and playing it back as you serve this great brew this winter.

I've had many a homebrewer suggest that you should hit the yeast with some pure O2 about a day or two after pitching with big beers. Did it with our imp porter that started at 1.10 and it conditioned well rather quickly.

Except for the fact I blew off at least a gallon! 5 gallons in a 6 gallon carboy with fermcap! FML...
