So in conjunction with my monthly poker night, I decided to open up the vault and do some barleywine tastings. I have about 12 barleywines and would like to open 6 of them. If I want to split them equally over two nights or two tastings, how would you/should I split these:

    2011 Abacus
    NG Barley Wine
DFH Olde School (2010? At least a year old...)
    Genesis 15:15
    Odell India Barleywine
    SN Bigfoot
FFF Behemoth (2012... too fresh still?)
    Avery Hog Heaven
    Midnight Sun Artic Devil (2011)
    Southern Tier Back Burner
    Stone Old Guardian
    CW Bourbon Barrel Barleywine

(And I have a couple wheat wines-- Fort Collins, Two Brothers Bare Tree, and New Holland Pilgrim's Dole)

[IMG]I'm definitely drinking the Artic Devil tonight but the rest is up for grabs.I want to separate them so that there's good beers on both tastings. Thoughts? Thank you!

I would separate the barrel aged from the regular barleywines and maybe separate the american from the english styles.

either way looks like a fun time

my wednesday night crew and I did a barelywine session. we did a fresh 2012 Sucaba, 2011 Old Ruffian, 2010 Old Ruffian, and a Belgo Old Guardian which is about a year old now. Great line up though it was tough to ever compete after the sucaba. The old ruffians were bottled 13 months apart and so upon drinking they were 4 months and 18 months old respectively... if your more curious my girlfriend has a post on her beer blog al about it www.brewsaic.com - weve got a few pictures and some tasting notes.

From that list, picking five for a really interesting tasting I would go with, in this order:

    Bigfoot
    Old Guardian
    Hog Heaven
    Abacus
    Arctic Devil

Starting with hoppy- Hog Heaven transitional- to the sweeter barrel aged ones. All very approachable IMO.

Thanks all! We actually ended up doing this:
DFH Olde School-- even after a year, still really, really boozy. Will give the rest of them a couple of years.

Arctic Devil- I was too excited to not drink this one. It was really smooth and not overly sweet. Fantastic beer that I probably won't see for a long time...
We then went off script as a few buddies brought in some barleywines...

FFF/Brew Dog-- Bitch, Please- Yeah, a complete mess. So much smoke and peat, everything else got lost.
Uinta Cockeyed Cooper-- This is an entry-level BA BW, and it tastes like it. It's good if you want to take it easy...

    After that...

Odell India Barleywine-- the hops cut through the malts pretty quickly, but faded at the end to give a lingering echo of barleywine. Very interesting beer. Only 2 people liked it (I was one of them...)

Southern Tier Back Burner-- this is a standard barleywine to me. Probably should have started the night with this to give it some perspective, but we were having too much fun.

So now, I've got the CW BBBW (LOVE THIS BEER), 2011 Abacus, the FFF Behemoth and the Genesis to be the features of the next Barley Wine night...

    Until next time...
