Most of the good ones I've tried have been mentioned. SN Bigfoot is a good start. Sucaba is awesome. Old numskul and old guardian are very good also. I just picked up some bells third coast, but I have yet to try it. I like the style, American and English.

One more vote for Avery Hog Heaven. And for some reference, the only other Barleywine I've had is SN Bigfoot and I've always thought I was too abrasive for my taste.

Several posts recommend the English style to get you started. Here's the BA list to help you find some that are available to you: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/style/152

I personally like Arcadia's Cereal Killer Barleywine, but I don't think it's available to you unless by trade.

If you can find someone willing to trade/send you one I really liked fff's behemoth (blond barleywine), it's a little hop forward but balanced and dangerously drinkable. I'd also recommend what some others said and try bells thrid coast and stone old guardian. cheers

Forgot about Behemoth.. that's an awesome barleywine. It's a good one to enjoy whenever one feels like splurging..

Stone Old Gaurdian is a great Value and pretty tasty. I am not huge into the style, but I loved that one.

Don't blow $20 on a bottle of Sucaba if you're still adjusting to the style.

Southern Tier Backburner was the first Barley Wine I tried. It's $8 and delicious.

I haven't seen it mentioned, but I think Duck Rabbit's is my favorite, and its an english style that someone suggested earlier.

I prefer it over both Bigfoot and Old Foghorn.

Heavy Seas Below Decks is not a good barleywine. Way too sweet and one-dimensional. It's like a mouth full of butterscotch.

Troegs Flying Mouflan is an excellent introduction to the American style of barleywines. The trick with this style in general is, age is good. Most American barleywines have the same layers of complexity that their British cousins do, only they start out covered up by hoppiness. Six months on the intense hoppiness will fade into a fruity, citrusy note that will really complement the beer well.

I'm not a big fan of american barleywines their hop profile throws me off and just reminds me of old imperial ipas but English barleywine is completely different animal so maybe you might what to look into that style

Recently received a 2013 Sucuba in a trade (thanks to lazarus25) and I'm wondering what peoples thoughts are on time to wait before opening. For American barleywines I tend to let them sit for a while to allow some of the hot hop profiles cool down a bit but I am not sure that an English style will change much. Thoughts? I have not had Sucuba before.
