Dogfish Head Olde School made with figs and dates. It's really realty good but is quite the ass kicker.

I might be in a minorty here, and I normally prefer American barleywines to English, but I really liked Shipyard's Double Old Thumper. Although it has (to me) a surprisingly low score..

my first two and still regulars for me are old guardian and old ruffian. they run 8-10$$. great way to start off in the style as they can skyrocket in price.

Avery Hog Heaven will always be the perfect example of barley wine -- and it's available!

Bigfoot is too close to crossing the line to DIPA or strong ale. I like Old Ruffian on quality, price, and availability. Then Green Flash Barleywine. And my favorite to date was Bolt Cutter, but good luck finding one.

Pretty shocked none of these are listed but hey more for me. I am a huge barleywine fan and I find these the best, in my opinion:
Dogfish Head "Olde School" (ages amazingly also)
    Lagunitas "Olde Gnarlywine"
    21st Amendment "Lower Da Boom"
    Founders "Bolt Cutter"
    Redhook "Treblehook"
    Uinta "Cockeyed Cooper"

    Midwest's BEST barelywines:
Two Brothers "BareTree" (more of a wheatwine but awesome stuff)
    New Glarus "Thumbprint Barleywine"
    Three Floyds "Behemoth"
Half Acre "Marty Stouffers Wild America"

If it's the only you have , I would open it now. It's very malty, chocolate ,carmel etc...No need to wait. Very mild hop flavor if any.

Weyerbacher's Insanity is probably the smoothest least offensive way into the style, but I believe its an English Barleywine style not American.

Love the style, but most breweries avoid it. This is an AWESOME beer for a bitter cold Autumn/Winter
night either outside under the stars, sharing with friends or in front of the fire. Sipping style.

Stone + Sierra Nevada are easy to find and good intros to the American style.

Heard Firestone Walker Abacus and Weybacher Insanity are outstanding English Barleywine styles.

    good luck....

I don't think I've *ever* heard of Delirium Tremens being listed as a barleywine, English or otherwise. It's a pretty standard Belgian Strong Pale Ale, unless I'm missing something...

The Pilgrim's Dole is a wheatwine; still it's very tasty, but it's not a barleywine.

I've had a half dozen including SN Bigfoot, and DFH Olde School was by far the best, imo. Not easy to find, though.

I haven't completed any trades but have gotten some good advice from some vets on here. follow this link: http://alewatcher.blogspot.com/2010/11/new-trader-tips.html

Also check out the beer trading general/help forum and read through some of the threads on there or even start a new thread asking advice.
