As temperatures drop and people turn to more robust beers a random question appears. What is your preferred age for barrel aged beer?

Depends on the barrel type, I prefer my bourbon barrel aged beers to spend a little more time in the barrel than brandy, rum, or wine barrel aged beers.

Some of the best barrel aged beers Ive had spent 6+ years in the barrel so Im going to go with the 2+ option.

I voted 1yr. Give me an annual barrel aged release and I'm happy. Haven't had many, besides Black Note, that have spent more than 12mo in the wood.

Depends on the beer, the barrel, what has been in the barrel and how much of the original contents remain.

Firestone Walker Double DBA #60 and Bzar Beans (and I think saucerful O secrets was another with many years in barrels) sometimes available on tap at barrelworks. As for bottles the longest aged one I've had was 2015 Central Waters Black Gold which spent 3 years in bourbon barrels.

Those Firestone Walker beers sound amazing. I'll probably never try them though because the central coast is one part of CA I don't ever visit.

I typically like things that are strong-flavored so I voted 2+ years just for that. However, I never use the age-in-barrel years as a factor in my purchase, so it really doesn't matter as long as I know that beer has good ratings.

I love bourbon forward beers so 2+. I've never had a great beer done in aged rum barrels, like great estate distilled and aged rum, that might be interesting too. Not interested in wine , tequila or gin.

I appreciate when a brewery barrel ages their beer for at least 1 year and of course have found I love beers that have been aged longer than that as well. Can Can from Westbrook was a BA Quad that they had in barrels for 3 years and I believe it was released in their 3 or 4th year of being open. So they had the wherewithal as a brand new brewery to brew the quad and let in sit in barrels for 3 years before they made any money on it which I thought was pretty amazing.

I'm OK with some bourbon, but I want to still taste the beer - so I was probably the only one that put 3mo.

The jury is still out for me. But I'm generally in the 1 year+ club.

A shout out for The Bruery's chronology series, which releases the same beer at 6, 12, 18, 24 months in the barrel. The first was an Old Ale (6,12,18 have been released), the next a Wee Heavy ( 6 just released ). I've really enjoyed seeing how the beer has evolved in the barrel.

I dunno. I'd have to study on that and I've got a headache studying photo editing software already. I can't remember any barrel aged beer I didn't like though. Some are simply better than others. Still wanting some BB Temptress from Lakewood Brewing. I have a local sitting on a keg until May for their anniversary, apparently among others. Cheers...

    I chose 2+

Rodenbach tastes fantastic after 2 years in the foeder. Lambic is fantastic at 4+.

I seem to like 1 year the most but I buy beers that are 2+ every time I see them

Really depends on the style. Big, imperial stouts like BCBS, give me at least 1 year, but if you go longer, I won't complain.

Now if it is a Scotch Ale or lighter stout, 3-6 months is usually my sweet spot. I honestly really like the blends of partial BA and partial not, like Boulevard Imperial stout.
