So a friend of mine has just become interested in barrel aged beers and has asked me to refer a few to him to try that are pretty easy to find. He's typically an IPA drinker, but I asked him what stouts or porters that he's enjoyed and he told me Left Hand Milk Stout. So far the only one I can really think of is Rahr & Sons BBA Winter Warmer. He lives in San Marcos and I figure there might be a place or two that had that around somewhere. Anyone else have some suggestions to throw his way?

BA Rasputin is still at a lot of stores. I've also seen the Widmer winter warmer (Brrrbon?) at the Specs at 290. I'd expect that it's probably around at the Gabriels in San Marcos. Clown Shoes Luchador en Fuego should be available soon, too. Just about anything that's "barrel-aged" tends to sell rapidly.

Any BA beer with pedigree will generally get scoped up pretty quickly in TX, but there are a few you can steer him towards that shouldn't be too difficult to track down.

    BA Dogfather
    Rye-on-rye

...and that is all I can really think of. Sheesh. It will get better once Founders, Firestone Walker, and Goose become more available in TX.

These aren't the best examples of what barrel aging a beer can do to it, and rather something that is easily tracked down.

Coney Island BBA Human Blockhead might still be around in TX. That shit is delicious.

Still seeing BBA Old Rasputin XV in ATX as well.

I was about to recommend BA Blockhead, but I haven't seen that in months and can't seem to find any stray bottles floating around.

Yeah, Live Oak Market has it for $12.49 iirc.

I'd buy more if I didn't already have 4 more, lol.

I completely forgot about BA Dogfather and Rye-On-Rye. I still need to pick up a bottle of Rye-On-Rye for myself. I don't think he will spring for the BBA Old Rasputin due to the price tag, but I'll still run it by him. Good stuff guys!

I think, for the money, Rye on Rye is the best bet. I like others too but that's pretty easy right now and quite inexpensive when compared to some others. AND (I did confirm this with Savannah @ Boulevard) it's the last of it for quite some time. It's aged for 2 years before being released, there's currently none on hand, and they don't plan on brewing it for "quite a while" were her words.... Basically, what's out there now is all there is for years. Snatch it up because it may hold some great trade value down the road, if that's your kinda thing.

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to grab a few next time I'm in Austin. I haven't seen any in Waco or Temple.

well, from the sound of it, he probably doesnt do any trading. you should try and get him some jolly pumpkin through a trade. they make some of my favorite barrel aged shelf beer. la roja, luciernaga and oro de calabaza are fantastic! all jolly pumpkin do are barrel aged beers, so they're pretty damn good at it.

YES! Widmer Brrbon 2012 is phenomenal. Buy up all you can. A nice, balanced beer that incorporates the barrel and bourbon, without overpowering the base beer. You can taste all the deliciousness. Just had a 22oz bomber.

Good to know. I've seen this a few places, but never gave it a shot because I haven't had any Widmer beers that really impressed me.

I had no idea Luchador en Fuego was BBA Chocolate Sombrero. I really liked the Chocolate Sombrero, so it only makes sense to snatch one of these up!

First I've ever had. Definitely impressed. I was checking out the scores and I'm shocked. Most of those reviews have to be from earlier versions. I didn't review it, but this guy's review nailed it dead on.

Appearance: Pours a clear burnt orange with an inch of foam; rather nice bit of splashy lace

Smell: Toast, caramel, pine, vanilla and a moderate Bourbon aroma

Taste: Caramel and toast, with a developing pine character in the middle; at the same time, the Bourbon and vanilla elements also build; more Bourbon, after the swallow, but the base beer flavors balance out the whiskey; not very boozy, despite the ABV

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Lucador en Fuego is not just BBA Chocolate Sombrero... it's BBA Chocolate Sombrero w/ ancho chiles & chipotle peppers. Nom.
