So is anyone else not a huge fan of bourbon barrel aged beers? I love a good single malt on occasion or a good bourbon, so I know I appreciate the flavor. I just feel like I want that taste separate from my beer as a general rule. I think I have only had a few that I would buy a second time.

    Anyone else?

I'm not that big of a fan. I like some more than others but most of the time I think the bourbon flavor is a little overwhelming and dry. But then again I don't care for bourbon or whiskey unless it's drowned in Coke or 7Up.

I used to not care for them at all, but they've grown on me the last 3-4 years. My mindset was "if i wanted something that just tasted like bourbon, I'd drink bourbon". I think now that I've dound some the the BA beers where the barrel actually compliments the beer rather than over powers it..I'm good to go. ~I think a number of breweries just throw a beer in a barrent for 3 months to say it's barrel aged and it's a hot mess..

I'm with you on this. I enjoy them when the barrel is just one of the many flavors, not overwhelmingly so.

I'm definitely not a big fan. Bcbs was the best I've tried tho. Still just not into that flavor profile all together.

    I like my beers funky.

When I first got started in craft beer I was not into bourbon barrel stouts at all either but then over the years my palate expanded and now I enjoy them a lot too (if it's made well). However I still like a variety and like to keep a mix of BA beers as well as non-BA beers as well in my arsenal too. Don't like to keep drinking same kind of beers on daily basis.

Like every other style, I enjoy barrel-aged beers when they're done well.

I'm a strong believer that Barrel aging should influence the taste of a beer and not dominate it. It can be a tricky thing to do but there's really no point in brewing a fine beer and then obliterating the taste by insensitive handling of the barrel aging process.

I went through a stage where I took the position I didn't like them and if I wanted Bourbon I would pour myself a glass.
However, I have since learned if it is done superbly than I love BBA beers. If it is mediocre, I hate it. I am rarely ambivalent about BBAs.

I'd actually like to see more BA beers outside of the standard whiskey or bourbon. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the bourbon, but rum, brandy, and cognac are too rare a treat at the moment.

Just the opposite. I dislike bourbon but love a good number of bourbon barrel aged beers and like just about every one I've ever had.

One of my locals does a Chardonay barrel aged and it is pretty good. The beer ends up being very slightly sour, which I like.

    Quick answer: Yes

I do tend to stick to ones that I know are well done, but living where I am, I consider myself to be pretty lucky as there are plenty of barrel aged beers pretty much year round here. Central Waters pretty much has a BB beer all year round now around here so I almost always have a 4 pack of something from them in the fridge. Also I have Oso taphouse about a mile down the road from me, so I stop in there quite a bit and there is usually some barrel aged stuff on tap, if not for sale in bottles as well. But usually I just have a few taps because im not a fan of the 750ml bottle format and charging $13-$15 bucks for it so I stick to the four packs from CW.

When I can't get anything CW there is always Dragons Milk, and others around. I also LOVE bourbon! Knob Creek is my favorite, but recently I've been trying a bunch of others, still find myself going back to Knob Creek though. Damn that stuff is delicious!

Since whiskey is really just distilled beer, it makes sense that the flavours would be co-ordinate well. I agree that if overdone they are not so good though. Subtlety is key, as with a lot of things.

I love barrel aging, but all kinds... love what is being done with Rum, Port, Sauternes, Pinot and Tequila Barrels. I agree that some aren't balanced, but I am a bourbon drinker by trade, so love the flavor profiles and how they can vary...

Have yet to try a barrel aged beer that wasn't better than the base beer (IMO).

They had to grow on me as well. I'm a big Bourbon fan but was't sold on the ides of mixing the flavors, but that has all changed now lol.

I don't drink hard liquor, so for me, barrel aged beer has given me a window to those flavors. Not all BA beers are great, but some are outstanding. As I type this I'm enjoying the bourbon Barrel Quad w/ Cherries from Boulevard.
