Agree, but love the Older as much if not more for its richness. Safe to say there is a BA beer for every palate, unless that palate is broken.

BCBS is worth the minimal effort/$ to acquire I assure you. Please do yourself a favor and drink some somehow.

Name some bad ones I might recognize, or are you only referring to local amateurs failed experiments?

hair of the dog. first brewery to do the barrel aging, and still the best in my opinion. I realize they do not distribute 90% of their barrel-aging products, but if any of you are in Portland, stop by the tap room and behold the menu. they have some barrel aged beers that go back futher than 15 years.

I've split a 4-pack, didn't think it was worth the $6/bottle I paid for it in Pennsylvania. More for the other Alabama BAs if it ever shows up here.

Most of the Eclipse variants, Parabola, the BC series are the beers with the most barrel-forward influences to my taste, off the top of my head.

more knowledge, more time in barrels.

more knowledge not the reason BCBS has more barrel than parabola though; it's clearly supposed to taste like that. when FW intend less balance and more barrel, they get it (cf the anniversary beers).

Did you drink it fresh or aged? Do you smoke cigarettes? Did you have lemon earlier in the day?

I have a difficult time understanding why they've been consistently lowering the bourbon barrel aging as well. 2006-2009 had a great bourbon character, it was 2010 when I really noticed the drop off. Still one of my all-time favs, though.

If you want more (and easier) Abyss, when you are in Reno go to Ben's on South Virginia (towards Mt. Rose HWY). I get a case each year, usually from them. I stopped shopping at Booze Brothers a few years back because they were limiting Abyss to two bottles (not sure where your experience was, maybe Moana Bens? That guy can be a dick). I laughed, put my bottles back on the shelf, and told them I would wait another week and every Ben's in town would have it. Sure enough, bought a case the next week.

GI has Keebler elves that magically stuff more barrel into each bottle of BCBS.

seriously. when i hear such a statement, i need to know exactly what is "barrel"? i'm also curious if you have an actual reason you don't think it is aged any longer? which vintage of Parabola were you drinking?

Yep. Not only was it disappointing, but I actively disliked it. Drinking a 750 of gross beer is unpleasant

Had a similar experience the first time I tried Old Speckled Hen. Came in a 750ml CLEAR glass bottle. It was so skunky, I took one-and-a-half sips and poured the rest down the drain. When my liquor store started getting cans, gave it a second chance and have been a fan ever since.

Old Speckled Hen was one of my only drain pours and I've had desire to revisit it

Yep. Great beer if it weren't for the risk of skunking in those damn clear bottles. I have no problem buying it in cans.

Central Waters Brewers Reserve Bourbon Barrel Barelwine is a great choice when choosing a barrel aged beer. You can definitely taste the bourbon barrel used to age this beer. Another good selection is barrel aged Old Ruffian from Great Divide. Both of these beers are well balanced and you can taste not only the base beer, but the barrel as well.
