Barrel aged CC Beers

    I'm curious as to other BA's experience with Barrel Aged beers from Cigar City. My experience in aging them has been limited to date with last year's releases of Hunahpu and Big Sound. Both were released in Rum and Bourbon varieties with Hunahpu also having a Whisky option. I found all of them delicious when released with my favorite being the Bourbon Big Sound.

    One year later and I have not been very happy with any of the ones I've put away. They are still worthy beers but all seem to have begun to slightly oxidize in one way or another. The rum varieties seeming to be the most affected. I'm wondering if anyone has had good luck aging or cellaring similar barrel aged beers from CC or if odds lend these beers to be better suited for fresh consumption.

    I believe the Rum Big Sound was infected, so that could be the issue.

    Yeah, I've had that batch of Rum Big Sound and it was definitely infected. In general though I've also found rum beers to not handle age as well bourbon barreled beers. I have no idea as to why that would be, but minus Rumpkin I just drink Rum barreled beers as fresh as possible.

    The rum BS was definitely off. I agree with SP that rum aged beers seem to not age as well in general. I have one bottle left of the 2011 Bourbon Big Sound. I think I will plan a tasting soon alongside the 2012 release of same. Should be interesting to compare the two.

    I opened a Stranahan's Whiskey Barrel Aged Imperial Milk Porter from last year with some friends for Thanksgiving and it was awesome. I haven't had it fresh, but I really wish I had more.
