Boy, it sounds like the market for barrel aged beers in Europe is just as crazy as it is here in the US. Price it ridiculously high and it will sell out.

I have inquired with a number of my local beer stores if they will be obtaining the barrel aged Chimay but based upon figures like 18.5€ this beer is going to be a 'pass' for me.:slight_frown:

    Cheers!

Can only imagine what a BBA Westy 12 would go for in the US.

Still sitting on 2 bottles of Oak Aged Abt 12 waiting for the wife to not be pregnant to open one.

sit on it even longer. Dirk at Kulminator thinks it will be a beautiful one in a few years. i'd agree that it needs another 1-2 years, minimum

Eeesh. 2 bottles, tough call. If you had 3-4, I'd say one now then one per year. TBH I like a year on it when *not* BA. And my preference for barrel character is in the background, not full frontal. But I'd still do one fresh for a baseline... If I had more than two.

Apple Brandy doesn't have as much of an impact to me as Bourbon. That's where I struggle to tell how long to let it sit. Luckily I am not in a hurry to open.

Just drank one for christmas. Not as tasty as the regular, certainly not bad but not worth the price tag.

That being said, i have one up for trade :-)

St Bernardus 12 Oak Aged is $30 around here. Glad I brought one back. Not so luck on the Chimay which will probably be priced in the same ballpark if it makes it out here.
Merry Chirstmas! Maybe hold on to it and try it next year?

The barrel aged Chimay Grande Reserve will likely hit the United States in March, but maybe as late as May. They had an issue with the bottles that were not acceptable for the U.S. market. It necessitated a costly remedy. It is a very subtle difference. Takes it back to the pre-stainless steel days. It will be limited, so depending on your market, buy up and put a few back.

Care to elaborate on the "issue"?

It is my understanding it concerned the size of the bottle and the measured amount of beer.

Just saw this for sale... $45. Is this in line with the pricing elsewhere in the US? Had to pick my jaw up off the floor when I saw the price tag.

Saw this in the comment section for a review of the beer on YouTube:

"...a mixture of barrels has been used [for the March 2016 release].

38% of French oak – second utilization
22% of American oak – second utilization
    18% of new chestnut
    22% of new cognac barrels

The second utilization French oak is from Bourgogne, the American I do not know."

Not sure about the source, but the dude who posted it is from Belgium and probably knows what he's talking about lol

I don't know the going price. I can get a case of six for $212. I was wondering the same thing.

$45 in NJ as well. I'll buy it at some point, but I'm in no rush because at that price I know it will sit around. There are too many other beers that I want to purchase adding up to $45 when I go into the the store and it's too difficult for me to walk out with one bottle.
