My boss lives and works in Reston, but was here in the Indianapolis area recently and absolutely loved a bourbon barrel-aged dubbel from a local brewery specializing in Belgian-style beers. Are there any similar beers available in Northern VA/western D.C. suburbs?

I'm looking specifically for the barrel-aged angle. He can walk into any good bottle shop and ask about regular dubbels and I can give him names of particular breweries for those. But BA versions are rarer and much more local.

    Thanks and cheers!

Does it have to be a dubbel? Finding a BA dubbel is going to be tough, local or not.

Around NoVa, Brothers makes a Rum BA Dubbel. It looks like Total Wine in Chantilly may have it. There's also Sierra Nevada Ovila but that is pretty widely available.

Thanks. Ovila isn't barrel-aged, is it?

That was the beer he had, although he also tried and liked a non-BA dubbel. A BA Quad would give a similar flavor profile in a bigger beer. Any of those aside from Boulevard BBQ?

I knew it was an unusual style, which is why I had to post locally to ask. If anyone thinks of anything else, keep 'em coming!

Lickinghole Creek brings out barrel aged quads from time to time. Not sure if any of them are out now. I've had Batchelors Delight (rum barrel aged quad), but know they have also released Redneck Wedding (I think it's bourbon barrel aged quad) and Bourbon Barrel aged Coconut Delight. I know Redneck Wedding and Batchelors Delight saw good distribution in NoVa.

Blue Mountain Local Species is BA'd. It's listed as a BSA but that's pretty close.

Lickinghole Creek has a variety of BA'd Tripels and Quads, as @Cpmitchno1 pointed out.

Allagash Curieux is a bourbon barrel quad, but is going to be by far the easiest to find that's similar to what you are talking about. People overlook it a bit because of how much they make, but it is really good.

There is also BA Three Philosphers and St Bernardus Oak aged (apple brandy) from time to time as well. Those are relatively harder to find and more pricy I believe.

They make a BA and non-BA version.

Adroit Theory recently made a barrel-aged quad that was very good.

Evolution just released a Chardonnay barrel aged Belgium that is available locally, and quite good.
