Would definitely suggest La Trappe Oak Aged Quad.. I believe the one I tried was from a blend of whiskey and French oak barrels. Very very tasty stuff (much better than BBQ IMO). The only downside is the price. The one I had was an Xmas gift, but I believe it was well over $10 for a 375 ml... I've seen worse tho.

It's a great idea. Very malt-forward Belgian ales aged in barrels.

I know it was not the original question, but...

As someone who loves quads and loves BA-stuff, I find that I am almost always disappointed by BA-quads. It isn't that they're bad (they're usually pretty good), it's just that the BA versions are never better than the standard, and usually are not quite as good.

Definitely still fun to try, but if I had to list my top 5 quads, none of them are BA.

I've managed to put together a near 7 batch vert over the past 8 months. I'm just missing Batch 7. I've got 4-6 and 8-10. And it was a pretty penny to get those 6 bottles. Gonna see if I can hold out for that 1 missing bottle but it's getting tempting to just have at it, lol.

I have one bottle of this that I'm holding onto, waiting for that "right" time. I know, I know....

It is way over $20 a bottle. More generous Xmas gift than you thought. People confuse the price listed with the bottle without the cork and cage.

Got some bottles from Batch 2. Wondering if anybody tried any from that particular batch? Which batch was yours?

I have had batch 2 – I have tried every batch made so except for batch #17 of which I have a bottle at home.

#2 is one of the better ones even if I think that #1 was better variation of the same barrels. Huge vanilla which is to be expected since they only used virgin toasted oak. It is probably going downhill at this point.

1 – 2 are spectacular, 3 – 4 solid but not as good, 5 is a lesser one but still good, 6 is really nice, 7 is unique with Islay whisky, great stuff if you like Islay, 8 not as good as 7, 9 & 10 they sort of lost it, decent but not worth the money, 11 – 14 way better than 9 & 10, good but not as good as first batches, 15 once more great, 16 one of the best ones.
Isid’or Oak Aged Trappist Ale was very nice but not worth the price-tag.
Quercus 1 & 2 are really good but probably impossible to track down, 2 is going downhill now.

They use their house British ale yeast, as has been stated. Thus, it is not a Belgian-style quad. If they want to make up a new American Quad which uses American/British ale yeast, then this definitely fits it. Of course Belgian Quadrupel is a made up style too, but that is a whole different discussion.

Every year this beer was brewed until this year, Firestone Walker described it as an English barleywine (see here, here, here, and here). This is plainly displayed on their website even to this day. It's a "quad" brewed with English ale yeast. Ergo it isn't a quad.

Xavier uses a blend of new and used french oak (cognac, red wine, etc). The blend is different each time.

You could also throw BA Partridge in a Peartree in there, albeit it's a lot harder to find.

The La Trappe and Straffe Heritage are probably the best IMO for a barrel aged quad, without spirit. Three Taverns Heavy Bells is far and away the best for spirit barrel aged. BBQ and Blasphemy are great especially on price alone. Stickee Monkee, outstanding.

Uinta Labyrinth Barrel-Aged Quadruple Black ale is outstanding. Licorice added in the brewing process.

Then why does it say Quad on the bottle? It Is even listed as a Quad on BA. Granted it does taste like a stout.
