I wish they provided some examples. At face value, it sounds like people are drinking more whiskey.

Agreed, examples would have been nice. On the other hand, with #s 4 and 5 being "Micro-distilled/artisan liquor" and "Locally produced spirits", respectively, I assume they mean (at least in part) beer. What this also says to me is that "barrel-aged" has become a trendy phrase, which could mean a big push to capitalize on it (e.g. Budweiser's recent barrel-aged Project 12 beers).

Yeah, I don't get it, unless we're way behind in VT, most bars don't have barrel aging programs....
Also got to love how they say cicerones and beer cocktails will be more popular than craft beer.... I'd like to know how that makes any sense.

    I thought the same thing.

Since they're bartenders who are being surveyed, "onsite" implies at the bar itself, so it doesn't sound like they're talking about beer.

I was wondering the same thing becasue I had never heard of this practice. A quick google search turned up this article about the topic:

Interesting. Had, until now, never heard about this...guess I will be in 2013. Thanks to you and Jesskidden for the the tip -- and setting the record straight. Seems pretty analogous to the barrel-aging trend with beers (with all the requisite controversy, as well!).

They're not talking about beer, they're talking about barrel-aged cocktails. It's a HUGE trend in upscale cocktail lounges in NYC right now, particularly if they're attached to a swanky hotel. Basically, the bar buys empty barrels (new or used), then the mixologist makes a giant batch of a particular signature cocktail, then ages it in the barrel. Hypothetically, the flavors meld as the components age together and pick up some flavor from the barrel. I've had a few of them before. They're delicious, but mostly a tactic to justify charging $18 for a drink.

Yeah, me, neither - until I came across this unit one day at a flea market, brand new, never used. "How cute," I thought, "...it'll look cool sitting on the bar of my (probably-never-to-be-completed) cellar bar..." so I bought it --- for a buck. (I frequent many what I call WTFM's - "white trash flea markets").

Figured it was just some salesman's sample or promotional item, and I was surprised when I took a closer look once I got home and saw that it was a "working" unit. Found the name on the base, checked out the website and was a bit shocked to see it was originally $50. Who knew?
