Barrel aging ever a detraction?

Curious if anyone has ever been drinking a barrel aged beer and thought, "Gee, there is a great beer underneath all this heavy oak and alcohol." I'll go first, I know I'm in the minority here, but I loved the tart cherry and subtle spice of Boulevard's BBQ but I found the bourbon kept getting in the way and I kept thinking how great a non-barrel aged version would probably be. Thoughts?

Couldn't agree more on BBQ, probably why I drink The Sixth Glass a lot more often! But yes, certain beers are quite good and the barrel aged variant just doesn't deliver, you aren't alone.

I like regular Stout Trooper better than BA version.

Could be wrong, but I believe Oak Yeti is just aged on oak chips, not in oak barrels (let alone bourbon barrels)...

But yeah, I prefer bourbon barrel aged beers with just a hint of the bourbon (or whatever the barrel previously contained)... more is not always better.

southern charred was pretty good, I like regular biscotti break more than bourbon, regular huna more than brandy, regular merlin more than merkin

yea there's that one but i've never tried it. I was thinking it would be cooler to do it in an a fresh oak barrel that hasn't seen any spirits yet.

I think Founders Imperial Stout is the best beer Founders brews.

I personally prefer bourbon barrel aged brews to have vanilla and caramel flavors and aromas than to feel like bourbon flavors dominate. I also enjoy a "chewy" mouthfeel to bourbon barrel aged beers than a big amount of heat. So, to answer the question, yes I do from time to time.

I've never had a beer aged in a wine barrel or a rum barrel I've not liked, but I could count those on one hand.

Can't agree with BBQ; one of my favorites.

My suggestion is Hibernation Ale. The barrel aged version was a chore to finish.

Had my first Rum Barrel Aged beer (Clown Shoes Hammer of the Holy) and it was excellent. The BA'ing aspect of that one wasn't too overpowering.

I don't know about better, per se, but I think Breakfast Stout is every bit the equal of KBS.

(and yes, I know that KBS is technically a different base beer)

Rock Art Vermonster is better than the BBA version, neither are world-class beers but the BBA tasted like straight booze added, no barrel character to speak of, and it cost twice as much as the regular version.

Did you try the most recent BA version of Trooper released last saturday? It's deeee-rishiss. I had both IST and BA IST on chrismas side by side and the BA version was honestly better...right up there with KBS IMO. They nailed it this time.

BUT, i've never had the past batches which I have ready mediocre things about.

If anyone says they prefer regular Allagash Tripel to Curieux, instant ban please.

    I mean, it's goot and all....but...NO.

    Every single barrel aged IIPA.

Also think DORIS is better than BA DORIS. Both were good though.

Found Hunahpu to be leaps and bounds better than Cali Brandy Hunahpu.

Good Gourd Almighty was an abomination relative to its Good Gourd base.

Terrapin Moo Hoo is a good brew, but was too thin for bourbon aging...they did it anyway.

Bomb! is preferred by me to Pirate Bomb!

There might be others but these stick out to me.
