I don't think IPA's should be aged at all.

    Doom was terrible, IMHO

I preferred Prairie Bomb to Pirate Bomb, personally.

What a great OP! Ihave never given this much thought. Also, i Have not tried BBQ but i Have tried much of Boulevard's line-up and enjoyed most.
A couple of thoughts: what do you mean by heavy oak and alcohol?
Oak, more generally, wood, is not something that can be picked up in the flavor profile (aroma or taste). What you do get from the wood are the subtle spices mostly described as vanilla or other flavors from the spice rack - something that you said you liked.
Maybe you don't like the residual bourbon (still in the staves of wood and up to a few gallons still rolling around in the barrel); fresh charred oak barrels might be better.

Cape May Brewing Co had a 4% abv milk stout that was pretty good, and the same beer aged on bourbon-soaked oak that just became a thin, bourbony mess. I think there's definitely some minimum strength needed for the base beer to be able come out on top of the bourbon.

as far as Barrel ageing is concerned I've always been of the opinion that the Barrel should influence the beer, not dominate it.

I'll add Flying Dog's BA Gonzo to the list. It was pretty good, but the base porter is really really good and the barrel aging just makes it taste like they added a half shot of bourbon. Not bad, but not necessary.

I believe it's an attraction for me. Love beer, love bourbon, love whiskey. Match made in heaven. Wine barrels? Not so attracted.

Day before yesterday, I watched a documentary on Bacardi rum. Interesting. Have any of y'all ever tried a rum-barrel aged beer? I ain't no big fan of barrel aged, but would be intrigued to try. *could Google search, but would rather get input from BAs on Beer Talk*

I've often hear oak to be used as a flavor descriptor, be it a barrel aged beer, Cabernet, scotch, or bourbon. Some single malts I've had taste like straight up chewing on tree bark. I don't have a problem with the flavor, just when it is overpowering the more subtle flavors like in the example. BCBS has a huge barrel presence to me but I enjoy it because it still manages to be balanced with the beer.

You won't be able to get any of it, but AleSmith did a one-off called Old Rumskull that was fantastic.

I believe Pirate Bomb is one. Had at least one other one that didn't wow me as much ( want to say it was from Avery, but not sure, they also do a few other's I'd to try ). 4 times out of 5 I'm all over the barrel aged stuff! Pirate Noir for sure is... Full sail makes a nice Bourbon Barrel beer that I don't believe gets sold here:angry:

I feel like I always enjoy a bourbon barrel aged version over its original counterpart. I just love bourbon.

gonna disagree with you. i personally find BA Boris to be an amazing BA stout and much more enjoyable than the regular. mainly because i find the regular a tad too thin in comparison. thats whats great about palates, though. everyones got a different one!

I think you misunderstood. I'm actually saying BA BORIS is better than BORIS, it's one of the few BA beers I liked better than the regular. I usually prefer the regular to BA, except for BORIS and maybe a few others.
