Barrel Questions

    Little flakes of charred oak floating around are pretty common in bourbon barrels.

    Yeah, that's what I would do. I would guess that the brewery was selling it so cheap because they don't want to bring bacteria into the brewery and they knew that the barrel wouldn't be usable for much else. I would turn it into a fun project and build a coolship, then use the barrel for fermentation. You'll probably be able to get some really quick sours through there after a few fills.
