Let's get some chatter about this place. I've been curious about it for a while and it came up in another thread I was just poking through (the guy was asking a different question and didn't want to go off topic). Is this place any good? Are all their beers barrel-aged? What's been good that you all have liked? Do they do just growlers? Bottles?
I have no experience with them, but the beer list looks great. http://barreledsouls.com/menu-category/beer-list/ Judging from the other thread that started this, it sounds like they only sell 32 oz. growlers.(?)
I just popped in randomly when i was visiting. Their BA MCAM was delicious however it was only on for growlers for their members club (which is about 100 people). I was able to get a pour of it and wish I could have had more. Their Gose was great as well and def recommend this one. The other beers I sampled were tasty. I think its worth a stop if someone is traveling up to Portland.
Any place that (seemingly) errs on the side of darker beers is my speed. Porter? Imperial stout? Barleywine? Scotch Ale? Oatmeal stout? I'm in. Heading up to Portland soon, actually. Maybe I'll give it a go. Would love bottles though. 32 oz. is great (better than 64, for sure) but I'd love smaller portions. Tapas, if you will.
Very cool room, I stopped for a taste of Paper Planes (DIPA) one of the first times it was released and was a big fan. Unfortunately they had no growler glassware on hand and I had no extras myself to get filled, they must have been open only a few months at that point...
Much thanks to OP for bringing this place up! I've never heard of it until this point but it's now on my list of places to check out this fall.
Emailed them today as I may stop in tomorrow on my way to Old Orchard and they said they only do 32 ounce growlers and they cost $5. Not sure if that is a deposit you can get back or not.
Nitpick alert, but man if these are the same screw top style as Jack's Abby and Proclamation which go for $2-3 that's kind of lame. Swing top style or 64 oz screw top I can see, but that is kind of high for an ordinary 32-ouncer...
I happened to swing by on their 1 year anniversary party and I was seriously impressed. All their dark/BA beers were great, hopefully they start bottling soon. Their hoppy beers were good but lacking a little punch. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area.
Definitely worth the stop in if you are in that neck of the woods. The brewery/tap room itself is very cool. Beers were solid, especially the BA stuff. Also, Banded Horn is 2 miles down the road so you can make it a multi-brewery stop if you are around there.
So I stopped in... and you should too. Great little place in the basement of a building just 5 min off of i95. Really laid back, enjoy yourself-type atmosphere with games and decent amount of seating. As for the beer, they had a nice selection from sours to barrel aged on tap (~8 beers?) and they were all solid brews. My ladyfriend enjoyed several of their goses, while my favorites were the nitro chocolate Quaker State and MCAM. They do 32 oz growler fills of most of their beers, but unfortunately you can't get either of those in growlers unless your a society member. tldr: Go, it's a great time.
I went again yesterday for the Anything Gose line-up of six goses. There were four other non-goses pouring as well. I love the original Space Gose, and it was cool to try all the variations. I have never had a bad beer from them, and the atmosphere is fun, as noted above. Yesterday was hot, and the basement was nice and cool. But they also have a yard where you can hang out and play cornhole.
Was only able to stay for a few, but they had a huge list of beers that all sounded awesome. Will definitely go back.
First, thanks to the BA community for making me aware of this place! I took a little road trip to ME yesterday and popped into Barreled Souls - totally worth it. I had the MCAM porter, the Stay Puft marshmallow - graham cracker stout, and the barley wine (on nitro.) IMHO everything was really good; I was impressed by the creativity and care put into the brewing process. Overall, if I was a hop head, I might be disappointed that there wasn't a bunch of IPA'S on tap...but those folks probably go to Vermont, anyhow. As someone who likes malty beers I was really happy to find someone who seems to want my business.
When I look at the New England page and the first 12 threads are in regard to IPA's and their acquisition, I often wonder where the other dark beer drinkers are. Look, I love all sorts of beers and IPA's used to be the only thing I bought, but come on, how many times can people write variations of the sentence, "Wow, this batch of ________ is so dank/juicy/enter descriptor here"?
