What's the deal? I can order a Dogfish Head 60 minute for $6 and get it in a 20 oz glass, but order a Founders Devil Dancer for $11 and get it in an 8 oz glass. IMO, if I'm spending MORE money for the ABV., then I also should be receiving the same amount of beer if I'm spending less money on a lower ABV. They seem to be jacking up the price (at least in NJ) for higher ABV's yet giving you dramatically less beer. Anybody else run into this issue? It seems a little ridiculous.

My brain couldn't help but read that one in a Jerry Seinfeld voice. Smaller pours for high abv makes sense to me. Keeps it simpler for establishments too. I have seen people, not me of course, get pretty tipsy on big beers.

If it was only that simple, but as Double J said, "Everything is worth what its purchaser will pay."

To be fair, they probably serve the more expensive, higher-abv beer in a distinctive glass which signals to other patrons that you are a beer drinker of uncommon discernment, and that's publicity you just can't buy except by paying for it.

Since most don't want to be considered a cheap ass or unable to afford good craft the price will rise until it goes completely off the page.
Many bomber prices are so high they make me laugh.

anybody else run into this issue? everyone who drinks beer has run into this issue. it's bullshit but it happens everywhere and it's best to just accept it and try to find places who are better about this kind of thing and support their establishments.

A local bar has $5 happy hour every day, 3-6pm. Every beer on draft, 20oz pours. Including Unibroue's La Resolution, which I think clocks in around 10%.

Good lord, after three of those? I haven't been that drunk since college.

Any moment now we should see the token post from a server who says something along the lines of... if you can't afford it then just stay home.

My favorite model for a beer bar is to charge the exact same for every beer, but give different size pours. Most times when I am at a beer bar I just want to try a lot of different beers, and charging $5 per beer really makes it easy to justify getting a bunch of different ones.

The bar pays much more for one of those beers than for the other. (Guess which beer in your example.)

In some places that's the way they make sure they don't wind up in violation of a state law or two and/or get sued for letting their customers consume too much alcohol too quickly and get visibly drunk well before leaving the bar. (Guess which glass of beer in your example.)

I was recently charged $6.50 for a can of slyfox 113 at a red robin. I had been asking the server about the craft beer list, with which she was very unfamiliar, and had mentioned dirt wolf at some point, so i thought perhaps i had been charged for a dirt wolf. Nope, it was the 113, not that it mattered, because they are the same price...
Over charging me is one thing, but why, why would they be the same price?!

ps, didnt order the dirt wolf because i was planning to get a case of it in the coming days, and wanted to give 113 another shot

I live in Jersey as well and most craft beer bars are pretty fair. Poor Henrys, Cloverleaf, Shepherd and Knucklehead come to mind. As far as 60 min vs DD its simple. The bar pays more for DD. Think about it, DD is $20 a sixer while 60 min is $10.

Last week I was at the Yard House in Kansas City, Kansas and ordered an Imperial Yeti, and it was served to me in a pint glass :grimacing:. It also cost $7, but I didn't care much as I had never had it on tap before, and I wasn't buying. If I was, I probably wouldn't have dropped that much one one beer. Buyer Beware; usually if I see something like Devil Dancer on tap, I know it's going to be way more than I'm willing to spend.

Prices aren't going down. Accept and pay, or just be more picky in what you buy. Ever price out how much a bar makes from a bottle of liquor? It's not exclusive to beer. Trying to get 3x retail is standard.

Trading has ruined me. I have a hard time paying the markup on draft "shelf" beers. Lately, I tend to solely frequent breweries/brewpubs, which typically price their beers reasonably.
