I’ve worked as an Ecologist in NYC doing research and wetland restoration work for the past six years. Before that I was a research assistant on a big salt marsh research experiment on the north shore of MA for about five years with some college overlap. I spend my spring, summer, and fall knee deep in marshes around NYC and winters at home applying for grants and permits and writing environmental compliance reports. I feel very lucky to do what I do in a place like NYC. Great colleagues as well!

I've been retired for six years. Before that I worked IT, both as a consultant or in house as the pendulum swung; I greatly preferred being a consultant because corporate culture and I tended to grind gears. I learned almost everything computer related on my own at an electric utility just to make it easier to do analytical work. I ended up in HR where I learned this mainframe third GL called Focus that was good for massaging data from an HRIS multisegmented monstrosity into report form. One day I was ready to go home and a few guys I worked with in IT had this problem of finding a few needles in a very large haystack that kept the employee savings plan payroll deductions from balancing. I liked those guys plus conceptually it was an intriguing problem that I knew would take them forever to do in COBOL so I said lets go. I called my wife and told her I'd be a little late for dinner which ended up being four hours. Anyway, a guy sat with me who knew where the data was and knew the key fields to use so I eventually got two files and merged them together, which made me a hero. I still feel good about that 30 years later.

Anyway I figured out I could make more money for my skill set elsewhere and joined a consulting company which was the best place I worked. Unfortunately they got bought out by another company that turned it into a shitstorm. So I went in house at a bank that was almost as bad as working for a utility. I knocked around at some other gigs before retiring and expanded my skills to non mainframe things like Oracle. I had some ups and downs (once did production support work on Christmas as my family was screaming at me to come to dinner and ignoring that what I was doing was why their Christmas was so nice) but I usually felt like the luckiest guy in the world.

What I do these days is write improvised music reviews. Beer usually helps get the muse active.

I know when I did an industry cert in August they had similar silly rules at the testing center. . Had two coughdrops in my pocket,. Had remove them from the wrapper to keep them in my pocket. I much preferred testing for promotion where they just threatened you with Courtmartial if you cheated. They did make a proctor go to the can with you, if you had to go...

Spent 26 years in the Air Force as an HVAC Tech at Titan II Missile Sites & then as a Radio/Communications Repair Specialist,

Then I took some time off to be stay home with my youngest son while my Wife worked, That was fun, but took me a while to find a path back to work. Moving to rural Oklahoma didn't help.

Went back to school & now work as a Biomedical Equipment Tech at a local hospital. Super rewarding job as long as things are going right. When things go south, you are not so popular.

There is enough physical demand to this job that I am looking forward to final retirement. Since my youngest is a Sophomore in High School that might be a ways off, my knees & back might say different

That is probably for the best. Substance abuse is a problem in the profession. Let us know when he finds out he passed and we can drink one for him!
