Thank you for your shelter volunteerism!

Rangering at many parks in either country would be so picturesque, I'm not sure I could personally call it work.

I am a former Humanities academic, but was neither a self-forgetting and pain-loving antiquarian, nor an intoxicated romantic. I’m working as a financial planner today, but for most of 2020 have been a stay-at-home dad to twins turning 4 next Wednesday. I plan to go back to readings books, thinking about them, and writing about them in a few years.

Getting paid to wreck stuff. Now that would truly be my dream job. I do enjoy a good demolition job.

This sparks a memory -- back in the mid to late-70s IIT always had a technical drawing competition for the local High Schools. My school's drafting classes always participated and we bussed into the city for the awards presentation.

I remember a few of us learning about the "student lounge" and scheming ways to sneak in. I can't remember if we couldn't find it, or just plain chickened out. Somewhere around 1977, IIRC -- probably saw you there!

Just over 28 years in the beer biz. Twenty with a large AB wholesaler, finishing as Craft Brand Director. Helped launch a new brewery after that for several years.

Started designing, maintaining, and installing draft beer systems while doing some consulting on the side. My latest consulting gig (building a brewery in a casino) found it tough to recruit a competent head brewer; so Itook on that position since it’s something I’ve always wanted to do. We are scheduled to open December 20th...Lord (and COVID) willing.

You know that's sorta the point. I'm not a fan of Newsom, but given how everyone threw caution to the wind on Thanksgiving, then I fully get why they don't want folks moving around for Christmas either. (That and if the 12.5% ICU beds available as of 12/5 in SoCal is a legitimate statistic as reported, then I don't know why anyone would oppose this?)

I was at IIT fall of 75 to fall 77. The bar's nickname was the Swamp: dark and noisy with a limited beer selection. We didn't spend too much time there. Off campus options were few. Bridgeport had a couple of bars nearby, but if the contingent was ethnically mixed, those bars were no-go. I did spend some time in the library looking at Brewers Digest back numbers. A perk at IIT was free parking for Sox games at old Comiskey.

Which doesn't mean I'm doing nothing. Just doing my own shit rather than wasting my time working for someone else.

The Netherlands has very generous unemployment benefits, thankfully. Which is why I've never complained about paying 50% income tax.

Agree 100%. I would have no issue paying 50% of my check to get health care, and other benefits I pay for anyhow. Once I pay my taxes, benefits and college cost I’m paying more than 50%. The fact that health care only comes from your employer is nuts. I’m facing a reorganization this winter. If there was public health care I would take the buyout and sit out the pandemic for a few months before stressing about work. The issue for me is to purchase health care will cost me almost as much as the buyout so I will slog on with some lesser position I am offered or interview for, no guarantees of a job either.

    Enjoy

I'm a working shop foreman at a mom and pop auto repair shop. 20 years in the industry, ase master certified for the last 10 years with an over exaggerated emphasis on light duty diesel. In my spare time I donate a ton of time with the K of C council at my Parish and enjoy trolling BA after having one too many.
