Anyone in the know have an idea what the substantial differences between these are? I for one loved the original, though most didn't. Got a bottle of the new one, which has a drink after date, rather than the drink BEFORE of the last vintage. Just interested

Not the Stoic was brewed with promegranate, which the regular did not I believe.

Finished my last bottle of the first Stoic about two months ago. IMO it was severely underrated on this site because it didn't adhere to an imaginary style (No such thing a a quad, sorry) But as a Belgium Strong Ale it was superb. Yes the first one had pomegranate. I'm still looking for the "not" the Stoic so I can't comment on that.

I didn't realize the first one had promegranate. Now I don't know what the diff is.

    Perhaps diff barrels?

Totally different recipes. If you want to use styles to get a ballpark idea, Stoic was closer to a trippel. It was light in color and had a bright fruitiness that meshed with the pomegranate. I agree with mudbug that it was underrated because it was nothing like a quad/bdsa/whateveryouwanttocallit. Not the Stoic very much is what you would expect from the style. Much darker, with lots of overripe stone fruits and spice from the yeast. The rye barrel is unmistakable, but not overpowering. I thought it was great. My point, though is that these are two totally different beers and even two totally different styles, despite what the packaging says.
