I went to this Portland brewery a while back, and LOVED their Kineo IPA. But their DIPA - Flume - tastes more like onion soup than beer. Anyone know what hops are in this?

Also, definitely get some Kineo if you're in Portland. It's great.

Flume was with Citra and Mosaic lupulin powder.

Not sure of the hops in Flume. I had it and it had a great aroma, but didn't have a lot of punch taste-wise to match.

I had Avalon recently per recommendation of the Foundation staff and it was really good. Very nice staff as well. Looking forward to seeing them evolve.

Honestly I enjoyed Flume more than Kineo. But when I went and bought beer the dude at the counter was a dick, had a single dollar bill on me and asked for a sticker and he was like "oh they're 2$ a piece." My buddy lent me the other dollar but I was pretty salty that the dude didn't just give me the sticker for a dollar.

hmm, maybe a bad batch? I thought flume was solid (think I had the very first batch).. Like these guys but would take austin st/bissell everyday of the week.

Did you get any onion flavor in your Flume? Because that was almost all I tasted/smelled in mine. Maybe a bad batch... I was up there in late May.

I'm starting to think that might be the case, bought it on May 27th. Really enjoyed Kineo, though; I'd put that up with the Foundation cans I got on the same trip (missed Bissell because I went to Foundation et al first, and Bissell sold out of cans while I was in line... boo :slight_frown: )

I had the 06/05 canning of Flume and thought it was a little bit raw and boozy, otherwise pretty good. I picked up some more this past weekend (but haven't gotten around to opening one yet) and a growler of Avalon which was decent enough but may have suffered a bit from a poorly tightened screw-top? I had Kineo back at the beginning of June and was apparently too lazy to write a review but rated it 4.02 (lower than the Flume). So, in summation, worth stopping at if I'm at Industrial Way anyway but not worth a trip on its own.

But the best thing about Battery Steele is that all the very worst hipster douchebags are next door at Austin Street and I don't have to listen to their pretentious gibberings while I'm in there.

Mast Landing is my new Plan B. when I'm in Portland and don't feel like standing in Line at Bissell Brothers.

I had the first batches of Flume and Kineo and definitely liked Flume better. I overheard a conversation that they were tweaking the Kineo recipe for their next batch. Went back and liked Kineo more than Flume because I thought the Flume was really green tasting while the Flume improved a little. I tried Avalon and thought it was OK but nothing noteworthy.

All of that said, it was all pretty good. If they can dial in their recipes they'll be putting out great stuff before long.

I just opened a 06/23 can of Flume and, comparing it to my notes from a 06/05 can, there are some pretty substantial differences. The earlier can was thick and sudsy and this one was relatively thin with little head or retention, the light piney taste at the back end is replaced by wilted scallions and, where the first can was a little raw and boozy, this most recent one is more just sort of dull.

I rated the 06/05 can 4.17. I doubt this one would have cleared 3.75.

Was recently there and had both Flume and DDH Avalon. Flume was a pretty solid DIPA, nothing extravagant, but a solid beer.

The DDH Avalon was really excellent, IMO. Bright, good carb, plenty of tropical notes, juicy finish. I ended up buying three 4-packs to bring back to Chicago and spread the word.

    100% agree with DDH Avalon

Recently added it as one of the extras in a few trades for the same reason.

I was an Austin Street guy on Industrial ave mostly because of Florens and Neverender. I heard they used African hops in Florens which is why we haven't seen it this summer. I could be wrong about the hops used but it would explain the absence.

Without Florens this summer, I go straight to Battery Steele now
