Went grocery shopping today and the wife grabbed a sixer of okto. I said let's grabbed Sam Adams as well and have a taste test. I have had both in the past and thought they were both decent. Both sixers came in under $7 (Widmer 6.88, Sam Adams 6.98). I thought SA's had a little better taste, but widmer was a little more creamier/velvetier going down. Both looked the same color wise, but widmer had a nicer head. My vote is a tie. Wouldn't turn either down.

I liked Widmer a lot. I also like Summit Fest Bier. Sam Adams tastes too metallic to me. Still, great beer style, one of my favorites.

For $6.99 a sixer, Yuengling's Oktoberfest is good.

This is my answer too, but I do prefer to spend the extra dollar a six on Spaten just about every time.
That's 2 recommendations for this beer I've seen from reputable BAs. We should all pull the trigger on this one!

Ha! Thanks- actually, last year it was getting a bunch of positive chit chat here on BA, so I picked up a sixer myself. It's definitely made the way I like it, more toasty and light than the darker and heavier caramel of Sam Adams' version. Here's hoping you enjoy it. Cheers!

Spaten Marzen. A notch below the best German Marzens, but at $7-8,. immensely drinkable and still better than many American-brewed Marzens.

That's the way I prefer Oktoberfest beers too. I'll definitely be giving it a try soon.

    Cheers!

Even a few of us non-reputable BAs thought last year's Shiner was a pretty good Oktoberfest, but I've not seen it yet this year.

Sounds like shiner's is legit. Sadly, we only get shiner's bock in my town.

Yuengling Oktoberfest goes for about $6 per 6pack, it's pretty decent too.

A suggestion? Talk to the folks who carry the Bock (preferably at the place where you do the most business) and see if there's anyway then can order it. Might just be that nobody has asked for it so they didn't stock it...

Will keep my eyes out. Love Union Jack and other FW offerings. They usually are in the 10 - 11 dollar range in my town. Love octoberfests, they scream lazy Saturdays and college football to me.

I've seen it, but I haven't bought it yet. For the record, I like a lot of the things you have to say, and I consider you reputable as well.

had Shiner O'fest this year. Don't know if it was my high expectations, changing palate, or a slight recipe change (more crystal, or even chocolate malt?), but I was less than impressed with the most recent iteration.

Good idea. The one chain grocery store in my town that carries shiner's bock says they will special order something. That's how I happened to get a hold of GI's bourbon county stout. Side story - No I didn't order it. But was in the right place at the right time. Was buying beer when the delivery guy shows up. See a case of BCBS (never see this, only the GI ipa). Immediately, I ask the delivery guy about it. He says someone ordered it in but only wanted a four pack. I said what are they going to do with the rest? He shrugs. I grabbed a 4 pack proceed to the checkout. Cashier has no idea what to ring it in for. She confirms you can special order. She goes and grabs another 4 pack for some reason. She decides to ring in for 11.99. I quickly ask, can I buy that 4 pack, too? I was thinking it would be closer to $20, based on pricing of beers in my town (seem higher than other places based on when someone posts a beer price check on something).

Regardless, may have to try and special order this.
