I'm looking to trade an Alesmith BAVSS but I'm unsure what a realistic trade would be. I was offered a Bell's BA Cherry Stout, Dark Lord 14, JK Provenance Lemon and Lime, and a Pipeworks IPA for a BAVSS + 3 Nelson. That seems decent, but I feel like I'm trading a great BAVSS for quantity instead of equal quality. Of the big stouts and sours available, what else do you think a BAVSS could trade for? I'm obviously open to expanding and adding as necessary, but looking for a ballpark. I looked throught the forums and couldn't really gauge. I've seen people looking to trade 1 BAVSS for 2 NG Wild Peach; 1 : 1 BA Cafe Americano, 1 : 1 Atrial, 1 Aurerelian...which might be asking too much. But I've also seen 1 BAVSS for 4-8 BCBS; 1 : DL + shelf beer. NOTE: I have one trade in progress and one in the works, so in the very near future I should have some trading feedback.
Figure out what beer you want most and create an ISO. It's not about maximizing return it's about getting a beer you want to drink more than the beer you have.
BAVSS is probably my favorite BA stout of 2014 just behind KBBS. A friend who shared a KBBS with me later shared BAVSS and he said it's like a baby KBBS. BAVSS is a tad sweeter, but is an amazing beer. That said, it's not difficult to land a BAVSS. I traded a bottle of Tired Hands + HF Anna for 1, close to $4$. I drank that one and am getting another for another bottle of Tired Hands + growler of Tired Hands. So essentially limited brewery release + enough solid local/limit to get it to $30 is basically what I'd consider to be fair. Based on that, Bell's BA Cherry Stout, Dark Lord 14, and JK Provenance Lemon and Lime are in the limited/brewery (albeit they are much easier to obtain and have higher bottle counts than Tired Hands bottles). As long as you are roughly $4$, it's a fair trade, but as @mhenson42 said, getting the beer you want to drink is the #1 reason you should be trading.
I agree, it's all about getting the beer you want to drink. However, I want to make sure I'm getting the best beer I can so I can enjoy it, so in that sense, it's always about maximizing return. Thanks for the feedback though, I appreciate. The trade forums is sometimes all over the place, so it's tough to figure out what fair trades are.
You could agonize about this for the rest of time. So if that's why you got into beer, please go ahead. If that doesn't sound like fun though, just pick a beer you'd like to try that seems on par (few bottles per person, $30ish or adding locals on either end to make up discrepancy, maybe brewery only or similar online sale options) and post an offer. That said, I agree with and have posted similar to @mythaeus on a number of occasions. Trading AleSmith BA beers away is rarely a fruitful endeavor, they really are that good.
A focus on maximizing return instead of pursuing beers you want equals a big "wants" list and a lot of "FT" postings. A few extra dollars will quickly be forgotten, sitting down with a buddy to drink a great new beer will not. I have traded the following: BAVSS for Caffe Americano BAVSS for Kill em' All BAVSS + Vanilla (x2) for Nooner 8+DCB+Caffe Americano Yes, I am addicted to Caffe Americano...
Would a BAVSS land a DB Mexican Cake or would a plus be needed? What kind of plus would we be talking?
had a BA cherry stout a couple weeks ago and it was awful.. also I had BA cherry at the firestone invitational last year and it was great so dont know if I got a bad bottle or if it just didnt age well but I would cry if I gave up a BAVSS for that.. trade for something you want to try if its brewery only beer you want your looking at 30$ worth. my most recent one was for side project stuff and abraxas but involved a few other beers as well.
I brought a BA Cherry Stout to a tasting a few weeks ago and it was phenomenal, so I'd say bad bottle based on my experience. Whether it's worth a BAVSS I don't know, as I've never had the pleasure of trying BAVSS
i traded bavss 1:1 for a 4 roses cake and another bavss for a couple de garde bu's. i really enjoyed everything i traded for and was able to share those bottles with friends as well. i also have one more bavss aging in my cellar so i would say those trades were definitely worth it to me.
I posted a few FTs involving BAVSS in the past, and was surprised by the lack of interest. Alesmith barrel beers are amazing, but they don't command a great deal of respect/klout in trading for whatever reason. The only comp. I can share was someone offered 1 KRE straight up. I kindly declined as I wasn't blown away by that, and figured I'd enjoy the Viet more. I agree with the rest here. Since there's no clear "value" on the beer, just pick something interesting you'd enjoy and go for it (2 Jester Kings seems fair $4$, an East Coast BA Stout, etc).. If you hear crickets like I did you can expand/adjust.
Hi OP. These comments are all pretty spot on. You should trade for what you want. However, your question is still valid because if you follow that line of thought and ask for something too rare or whatever then you'll have people on here left and right crapping all over your trade request being "off". For instance, I've heard BAVSS and Le Sarrasin are both amazing. If you tried to trade 1:1 you'd get railed on here despite the fact they both had a similar per person count when they first released. Sometimes it's hard to know bottle counts and cost associated with a beer so maybe a more useful approach in this forum would be to list a few beers you really want and ask if BAVSS for one of them is a fair/realistic trade.
Thanks for the help guys. It was kind of a vague question, so I understand that it's hard to give very specific answers, but all answers were helpful and appreciated. Now that I have a better idea of what the ballpark is, I have a couple trades lined up. I drank one already and will be drinking the second one...but the other two are to try some beers I've been wanting to try. Thanks again!
Hit me up if you are interested in any Colorado stuff, for that or the other AleSmith BA stuff...I agree that they don't have the big name pull of some other beers, much like a lot of Colorado stuff. Which is ok with me, less hassle to deal with
I'm planning a big Speedway night for the near future to include BASS, BAVSS, VSS, and JBMSS - it'll be in Colorado Springs, but I love meeting new folks who appreciate great beer if you're interested... To bring this back to OP's question, I traded for BAVSS in a fairly large trade that included Modern Times sours with Casey beers on my end - $4$ was spot on for each of us and I think we both got GREAT beer out of it!
Definitely less hassle without the hype machine haha. I will absolutely keep you in mind for any future releases... I usually try to get 3 of any of Alesmith's BA item as: one for now, one for later, and one to trade $4$ for some low key stuff.
