They DO sell bottles of it to-go. A friend of mine bought some while we were there a few years ago. I don't think they're available for consumption on premises (they aren't on the menu), but I don't know for sure.

I'm part of a couple FB beer groups that include liquor store employees. At least one is expecting a shipment next week. Elite Brands is the distributor in this area, so at least a few spots (including my local watering hole the Bull & Bush) should get 'em.

No. Well, it is on-par with how all cheap Pilsners were like 10 years ago and some of them still are. But this is way worse than normal "Markenpils". Perlenbacher Pilsner, to me, is kind of the new standard of cheap german supermarkt Pils: It does not try to be too bitter, goes for a more mild, well rounded taste, and manages to be way better in my opinion(trying to get great noble hop aromas witch cheap hops at a cheap price can only go wrong)

To tie things back to Bayernbiere - what do most people feel are Bavaria's best pilsners? I get that it's not exactly pils country in the south, but are there any that are particularly beloved around Munich? What about the more pils-heavy areas further north like NBG or Wurzburg?

My personal facvorites are from franconia-Gampertbräu Försterpils and St. georgenbräu Buttenheim Pilsner. Oddly enough, franconia really excells at Pilsners, and a lot of Pilsners are also local favorites, like Kessmans Herrenpils. Augustiner Pils is not bad, either, though it basically gets no love from anyone usually... Würzburger Hofbräu Pilsner can be quite nice, as can Kneitingers. But NBG Pils? Like Tucher or Lederer?Nope, just, nope.

What are your thoughts on Ayinger Bairisch Pils?

For what it's worth, I found some Würzburger HB Pils last year and thought it was outstanding. Thanks for the reminder! Now, where the heck did I find it?

I'm a big fan of the Franconian pilsners I've had as well. Herren is possibly my favorite beer, period. While not quite as nice (and less consistent), I also enjoyed the ones from Faessla and Klosterbraeu.
I like Augustiner pils and Weihenstephaner pils, too. I have it on pretty good authority that the Weihenstephan staff is partial to that pils.
One thing that has always confused me is the Munich pils market. Everyone except HB makes one...but what kind of audience is there?

None, because I actually never had it. I lived in franconia for quite a while, and when I travelled to Munich, for instance, there was often something way more interesting to drink. In general, I am not the biggest Pils friend, but it also shows how divided and regional the german beer market can be...

As for why the munich breweries make one-good question. Tradition, maybe? Maybe pils -used- to be way more popular in munich than it is now? Maybe tourism? Honestly, no idea, some data to back it up or decline some ideas would be nice..

A couple of years ago, I was there on one of the hottest days ever recorded in Germany, would have loved the option of a draught Helles, but that’s the way things are.

Best Bayrische Pils? I guess the list is the same as the best Pils in Deutschland.
These are in no particular order:
    Kneitinger Pils
    [IMG]
    Schönramer Pils
    [IMG]
    Keesmann Herren Pils

    Any more?

If we expand the geography a bit to the neighboring state of Baden-Württemberg I would add Rothaus Pils Tannenzäpfle to your list. A local craft beer bar had this beer on tap last evening and I ordered a pint.

    Cheers!

Not sure that I've had it, and if I have, it wasn't memorable enough to get my attention.

Tony, Ayinger Pils was recently (last year) introduced into the US market. They are pricing the beer high (e.g., $12+ for a 4-pack of bottles) and there are no dates on the bottles.

I have had it on draft a number of times (with the hope that draft = fresh). I have enjoyed drinking those draft pints.

I will not be buying the bottles due to the negative combination of too high a price plus lack of bottle dating.

    Cheers!

Uhm... first of all: I personally would not put Schönrahmer on that list. Not because it is a bad beer, far from it, but, like all their beers, it seems just pretty decent to me. In german "craft beer" circles there used to be a hype regarding the traditional Schönrahmer line up, and I was always like "come on,which other traditional, proper bavarian brews do you even know?you are all just celebrating it because its the first time you are introduced to that kind of brewing culture". (If you regard it as one of the best though, no offense intented,I just..tend to get triggered by praise regarding that brewery). There are many excellent lesser known Pils lurking in the franconian countryside..[IMG]

Oh,I totally forgott about one I used to have all the time, because I did never think of it as a Pils, but..Becher Bräu Bayreuth Kräußen Pils. A light, unfiltered wonder with a nice noble hop bite and citrusy notes. On a hot summer day, I often preferred this one to Manns Bräu Dunkel...And everyone who knows me, knows that this is the highest praise a pale beer can get:wink:
