Will be in the Munich area late March for a couple of days. Would like to purchase some Bayreuther Hell (like this beer very much) before returning back to the states. I have contacted the Brewery itself but was given a confusing response. Also contacted the Orterer beverage chain but have not received any info yet.

Anyone know if this beer is readily available in the Munich area and if so can one buy it in keg form? Thanks for any input.

What kind of keg? Initially this sounds to me like something best taken care of at the brewery itself.

And that brewery is Maisel, in Bayreuth, Upper Franconia.

I agree with @TreinJan and @herrburgess that chances of getting a keg of Bayreuther in Munich are slim. Even finding bottles there would actually surprise me, but from what I've been reading beer distribution is slowly changing, so maybe there's a chance at least at a specialty shop.

Any size keg would suffice. This brewery refers to itself as a southern German brewery. If so, why no Munich dispensing? Wife bought a few bottles months ago (but as a pilot who travels much obviously) she couldn't remember if they were purchased in Munich or Frankfort.

Southern Germany is difficult. The brewery is in Franconia, Munich is in Bavaria. That is a big difference.
"Bayreuther Hell" was designed as a bottle-beer brand just some years ago. It is only the retro label that makes it look like an old brand. Wonder if they fill kegs at all. Maybe that is the reason for the "confusing" answer.

This was the reply I received. The listed address is about 25 miles NW of Munich from what I could ascertain on google maps. But that was it. I don't know if its a warehouse or what but no other info was provided like a telephone number of this location.

Thank you for your kind inquiry and your interest in our Bayreuther Hell.

We will be happy to give you the following source in your area , which sells Bayreuth HELL .

    Getränkevertrieb Krämer GmbH

    Johann-G.-Gutenberg-Str. 30

    82140 Olching

We hope, we have helped you with this and wish you many enjoyable moments with Bayreuther Hell.

Krämer is a big Getränkemarkt, details: http://www.getraenke-kraemer.de/
Don't think they have kegs there.

Bayreuther Hell is widely available in many Rewe markets in the Rhein-Main area. So it seems likely that your wife rather bought it in Frankfurt than in Munich. Not surprising though that Bayreuther Brauerei (not Maisel's) don't really distribute to Munich.

    Bayreuther = Maisel.

Oh they fill kegs. I used to live near the brewery, they had it from tap at their huge beergarden.
But yes, its basically their old Aktien Hell, rebranded and filled in retro-labeled bottles.
    I really hated that move.

I e-mailed the Kraemer group ([email protected]) and received this response.

    Dear Art,
Sorry we don´t have Bayreuther Hell.
    Kind regards

Maisel is not a small place. They distribute their beer using various brand names:
    1. Maisel for their standard, that is Weißbier
    2. Aktien, for the "Franconian" style beers (with swing-top bottle)
    3. Bayreuther, the retro brand (with Euro-bottles)
    4. Kritzenthaler (alcohol free)
    5. Maisel & Friends, their craft beer
    6. and a specially designed "Bio-Weiße"
By using different labels and bottles, and not having "Maisel" on every label, they give the impression of a big variety at the shops. Whenever I see the Maisel range of beers, it looks like a successful strategy.
