I am in need of enlightened BA's help.

Over Christmas, I purchased some BB4D from Kuhnhenns. Today, I went back to Kuhnhenns and purchased the last bottle of 4th Dementia they had (according to my waitress).

However, once I got home, I compared the 4D bottle to the BB4D bottle and they seem virtually identical - with the exception of the gold foil on the BB4D bottle. They both have the barrel aged logo/sticker (I thought the regular 4D did not have this).

I vaguely remember a thread on here that talked about distinguishing between the two bottles but cannot find it via search.

I have attached pictures of the front and back of the bottle and would appreciate any clarification - just want to make sure I am giving my trading partner the right info!

    Thanks.

The BB4D is on the left.

Gold foil is the only difference that I am aware of. Damn fine beers, both of 'em.

My barrel aged 4D had a sticker on it that said "Barrel Aged"

4D is noticeably lighter colored than BA4D.

Hold them up to the light, the difference should be pretty obvious.

Having had to ID these two recently, the regular 4D was without the foil and did not carry the gold-printed "barrel aged" moniker. Looks like both of yours are BA to me.

Not to ask a stupid question, but by sticker do you mean what can be seen on the left hand side of the bottles in the pictures, or another sticker somewhere else?

    Thanks!

I'm trying to find the picture, but I can't. It was an oval sticker on the neck of the bottle, about an inch and a half long by an inch high. I'll keep looking.

I know the label on the neck you are talking about - I saw it on google images when searching. My only worry is that it wasn't on the bottle of BB4D the brewery sold me in December. Maybe that was a thing they did in previous years?

Ill have to check my bottle of regular 4D to see if there is the barrel aged gold badge like yours.

I think the sticker on the neck is from a previous years release.

    D'oh, you're right. It was a 2010.

When 2010 BA4D came out in NYC in 2011 it had a gold foil and a Barrel Aged Aged sticker attached to the neck. The 2011 regular 4D version that came out in 2012 had none of those. I say you're good on both if that's any indication. After having plenty of both I'd have to say, if you were to open both side by side you should be able to easily tell which one is which. Either way, I think you should have no worries about your bottles. Cheers.

    Hey, here's an easy breakdown:

2010 4D: No foil or gold BA emblem anywhere. States "2010" on the back label.
2010 BB4D: Typically has gold foil and a BA emblem on the neck. States "2010" on the back label.

2011 4D: No foil or gold BA emblem anywhere. States "2011" on the back label.
2011 BB4D: Typically has gold foil and a BA emblem printed on the front label. States "2011" on the back label.

OP, it looks like the foil was removed from one of your bottles, but that doesn't matter...both are BB4D 2011. If you purchased some at the brewery in December and it didn't have the gold BA emblem on the label itself, then it was likely regular 4D (vintage determined by date on the back label).

As Knifestyles stated those are both BB4D.

Thanks for the help everyone. Was surprised to get a BB4D considering they sold out of them a month ago supposedly.

They seem to constantly "forget" that still have some stashed away...leave it to Kuhnhenn.
